Covenant and its member organizations are considered not-for-profit corporations as described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and are exempt from federal income taxes on related income pursuant to Section 501(a) of the Code, except as noted below. Tax-exempt organizations could be required to record an obligation for income taxes as the result of a tax position they have historically taken on various tax exposure items including unrelated business income or tax status. Under guidance issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board, assets and liabilities are established for uncertain tax positions taken or positions expected to be taken in income tax returns when such positions are judged to not meet the "more-likely-than-not" threshold, based upon the technical merits of the position. | IRS990/Desc | 0 | St. Joseph Hospital provides quality medical healthcare for all people through direct patient care at various hospital and clinical locations. Although reimbursement for services rendered is critical to the operation and stability of the Hospital, it is recognized that not all individuals possess the ability to purchase essential medical services and further that our mission is to serve the community with respect to providing healthcare services and healthcare education. St. Joseph Hospital provides care to persons covered by governmental programs at below cost. Recognizing its mission to the community, services are provided to both Medicare and Medicaid patients. Charity care is also provided through many reduced price services and free programs offered throughout the year based upon activities and services which St. Joseph Hospital believes will serve a bona fide community health need.
