Event details: travel back in time to the early 1900s to discover the world of henry chapman mercer, archeologist, anthropologist, ceramicist and tile-maker, right in our own backyard of doylestown he designed and built the poured concrete structures of the moravian pottery & tile works and his home, fonthill castle. Their unique design and historical significance placed them on the national registry of historic buildings. Mercer founded the tile works in 1898 as a way to preserve the craftsmanship of the past that was threatened by the industrial revolution. He believed creativity was a bridge between the past and the present to deal with change. A guided tour of the moravian pottery & tile works museum -create your own tile in the style of mercer's original designs "fonthill castle, mercer's home, is adjacent to the tile works and there will be a docent-led tour revealing walls, floors and ceilings adorned with tiles designed by mercer himself. Both buildings are surrounded by lush, beautifully landscaped grounds, perfect for a fall day. Number of attendees: 30
