This included newspaper ad buys in local newspapers, social media with Facebook and Instagram accounts, billboards, yard signs, and t-shirts. The message was to show the natural resources in the county and encourage citizens to protect them by ecotourism or youth education while avoiding economic options that would impede rural community growth. This included work with Appalachian Rekindling Project, a nonprofit providing opportunities for economic growth using traditional methods to restore surface mined land to agricultural use. Established a website that carries up-to-date news about developments in the area regarding the natural environmental and economic changes. The website includes video that were developed and posted on Facebook and Instagram and has sections describing Concerned Letcher Countians' goals. The website also includes quotes by local citizens about what they think would help the region grow and develop and whether they support or oppose particular projects. A survey and email message option allows visitors to the site to leave their contact information and their opinions and concerns. Invited a consultant who was a former Federal Bureau of Prisons Director to a meeting to educate those in attendance about how the FBOP prioritizes projects, how they view Letcher County as a site for a facility or not, and how citizens can best communicate concerns to the FBOP. This allowed local citizens to question and share concerns with a person who had been the highest office holder in the FBOP and to gain knowledge about how best to protect the community, including landowners who do not want to sell their land. This was a learning experience for members of the community.$80,000$12,341
