“Part 1, line 1 - organization mission or significant activities more than just a cinema, it will serve as a gathering space where film lovers, students, and locals can come together through curated screenings, special events, and collaborations with institutions like film at lincoln center, moma, the marlene meyerson jcc manhattan on the upper west side, city college, and columbia university. Nonprofit cinemas enhance cultural vibrancy and boost the local economy-driving foot traffic, supporting small businesses, and creating jobs. A 2024 study by art house convergence ound that 74 percent of patrons see their local art house as extremely valuable to their quality of life, with 83 percent saying it introduces them to new perspectives. We want to give the upper west side community a place to connect, engage, and be inspired by the power of film”
“Part iii, line 1 - organization mission the plan for the uws cinema center inc. (uws cinema center) is designed to solve the several pressing issues that intersect within a single mission -since the demise of the lincoln plaza cinema and other venues over the years, the upper west side has gone from being a hotbed of cinema exhbition to a veritable desert. While there are more than twenty-five dedicated art film screens below 14th street and a similar number in brooklyn, there are currently only three full-time screens above 14th street, all at lincoln center; -unlike many locations throughout the country, new york city does not have any comprehensive film education program that has a permanent physical home within a cinema complex; -west side rag, a local news outlet, shows that the west 90s is the only 10-block stretch of broadway that has more storefront vacancies when compared to the same count last year. And that count is nearly twice the number of vacancies in the four neighboring zip codes on the upper west side. Clearly, this commercial strip is in need of an anchor destination to bring back the vibrancy of the neighborhood; -the metro theateer, at 99th and broadway, has been shuttered for more than twenty years. Its landmark marquee and facade are showing the stress of having been ignored and are in urgent need of restoration. The hollowed-out interior is in danger of falling apart if not put into reuse.”
