“Part I 10. This amount reflects funds spent on groceries and prepared foods for clients, staff, volunteers and for events. For example, when meeting displaced college student for first time who was seeking assistance for housing and work, a meal was provided during intake meeting; meals and snacks were provided for participants in listening sessions, volunteers at tabling events promoting cultural education and pride (MLK day, Juneteenth, Cultural Fashion Show, Africa Day community celebration). Food drive donations supplemented with Halal and traditional foods eaten during Ramadan for families around this holiday. (Africans on the Eastside = AOE). AOE uses culturally relevant food to help establish trusting relationships with community members, often on the margins and overlooked in the past by organizations that did not recognize cultural norms of the group, including dietary restrictions. 16. These funds were used for administrative expenses and event costs. For example, phone bill, zoom and google subscriptions, L&I costs, transportation costs (as we go to clients, drive clients to events, health appointments, home visits, etc); access to capacity building and event planning materials via Masterclass subscription (series on advocacy), Leadership Lab subscription to learn more about how non-profit boards work, subscription to Tech Soup to access discounts on business materials; supplies for events/workshops for crafts materials, markers, overhead projector, portable speaker, materials for events such as cutlery, table cloths, decorations, youth engagement games. Part II 24. AOE staff use their homes and personal equipment (desk, printer) for their work. Assets include a portable speaker with a microphone for outdoor events, an overhead projector and screen with a foldable screen, donated decorative pillows and African print cloth for decorating venues, craft supplies for youth engagement activities, AOE banner used when tabling at community events. Office space is available for use at mini-city hall in Bellevue once a week. This space is a shared space for community-based organizations (CBO). 31. To supplement grants and donations, AOE participates on several community-based and city-run leadership and advisory teams. Advocacy work for the community we serve allows us to bring in community members alongside AOE, allowing them to advocate for themselves, with AOE support, in public forums/meetings when public comment is needed or requested. Participation on other CBO teams is also part of our capacity-building efforts. For example, Leadership Eastside offers a leadership development program grounded in the practical skills of adaptive leadership that exposed AOE to other leaders and organizations that we can access to provide expertise and services beyond our capacity; Front and Centered, Eastside Pathways and Eastside For All with AOE offered our youth and families access to in enrichment programs and collaborative projects with other youth leaders. The stipends AOE received for this were crucial in allowing us to continue to offer cost-free services to our community members in need. Part V 28. Human services include assisting clients with navigating conflicts with landlords, increasing awareness of immigrant rights, rental agreement rights, applying for affordable housing, jobs, food access for vulnerable populations, including domestic violence survivors; non-emergency transport to medical appointments, interpreter services as needed. With the influx of asylees to Tukwila WA in late 2023, ongoing support was needed in 2024 as asylees began to leave the Tukwila site and find shelter in other parts of the state. AOE conducted listening sessions with ~60 men from Senegal, assessing needs and ongoing support needed. Other organizations were contracted to assist the asylees and AOE stepped back to allow orgs with greater bandwidth and resources to assist. 29.
