Music on the Strait aims to share chamber music, both its traditions and its emerging voices, through community programing and educational outreach in beautiful Port Angeles, Washington. The festival celebrates classical music in the singularly beautiful environment of Olympic National Park and the Salish Sea.

| Music on the Strait aims to share chamber music, both its traditions and its emerging voices, through community programming and educational outreach. Founded by Olympic Peninsula-raised musicians Richard O'Neill and James Garlick, Music on the Strait strives to: - Enrich the arts community of the Olympic Peninsula through wide-ranging collaborations and diverse programming; - Educate our community, and especially young people, about artists and composers from diverse backgrounds around the world; - Inspire our community through world-class chamber-music programming at the highest level; - Contribute to the local arts economy; and - Celebrate and promote the arts across the Olympic Peninsula and Pacific Northwest. In addition to presenting some of the world's greatest soloists and chamber musicians such as pianists Jeremy Denk and the Takács Quartet, Music on the Strait is proud to work with some of the world's leading composers. We perform and commission works from our composers-in-residence such as Lembit Beecher, Paul Chihara, Paul Wiancko, and Gabriella Lena Frank. For instance, The Happiness of Two Salmon Returning Home , composed by Lembit Beecher in 2023, is based on the Elwha River's remarkable restoration. MOTS is proud to have commissioned, performed, recorded, and shared this new composition with children in local schools-helping young people understand the arts as an intrinsic piece of the local ecosystem and the future of the community. Music on the Strait collaborates directly with local arts organizations, including the Port Angeles Symphony, Port Angeles City Ballet, Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts and Field Arts & Events Hall. We also work with local entrepreneurs and small businesses, such as Camaraderie Cellars and Subalpine Tees, as well as local artist and designer Thomas Eykemans. Through our Fiddleheads educational outreach programs, we work in local public schools to encourage and foster a love of the arts in our young people. Established in 2022, the annual Dick and Alice Rapasky Community Scholarship Program has awarded $500 scholarships to over fifty local students. With its focus on education and mentorship, the program supports students-in-need as well as music teachers and the local arts economy. As Music on the Strait grows, we look forward to expanding our programming: by offering more concerts throughout the calendar year; by sharing our Fiddleheads outreach program with more schools and children; and by developing the scope of our Rapasky Scholarship program to reach more students, families, and music teachers in our community. | $0 | $93,591 |
