Huron Station Playhouse's mission is to champion new voices in theater and film, and provide education and access to the surrounding area by connecting local artists and students from a historically working-class neighborhood to creative professionals from the highest echelons of the entertainment industry. Through new plays, writing workshops, acting classes and evenings of creative education, we hope to revitalize theater in Los Angeles while providing opportunities to the next generation of writers, actors and filmmakers.

Mission

Huron Station Playhouse's mission is to champion new voices in theater and film, and provide education and access to the surrounding area by connecting local artists and students from a historically working-class neighborhood to creative professionals from the highest echelons of the entertainment industry. Through new plays, writing workshops, acting classes and evenings of creative education, we hope to revitalize theater in Los Angeles while providing opportunities to the next generation of writers, actors and filmmakers.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Theater Productions: In the last year, HSP has put on 5 staged play readings. Across the 5 play readings, 1,650 people attended as audience members, 40 young people volunteered and participated as ushers and 65 artists contributed their talents. This programming was built on a creative community of artists and theater-goers interacting. 50% of tickets were $45 or less to create affordability and members of the east side community were offered an additional 20% discount on the tickets.-$21,933
Huron Young Adult Education Programming: HSP served 23 young adults in the community. In our "Youth Acting Class", the inaugural acting class consisted of 20 15-20 year old students. The class ran for 10 days (4 hours per day) with students preparing scenes from contemporary plays for the final free performance for friends, family and 3 industry professionals who provided constructive feedback. The cost of the program was $100 per student, with 4 students receiving full scholarships and 3 more receiving a partial scholarship. The goal of the program was to provide students with a high quality summer acting education program without a financialbarrier to entry.--
Huron Adult Education Programming: HSP ran the first Adult Acting Class where artists received six four-hour sessions for $450 (well below the industry standard). Fourteen artists participated with 2 receiving scholarships. Students workshopped scenes with the guidance of 4 industry professionals, receiving artistic and industry advice to continue pursuing their acting careers.--

Part II, Line 23: Land & Buildings

Leasehold Improvements in connection with updating the building for theatrical performances and hosting audiences. Improvements include bathrooms, break room, theatre space updates, stage curtain, sprinklers and installation of an ADA compliant ramp.

Part II, Line 26: Total Liabilities

Once executed, the lease will be retroactive back to March 1, 2024. No rent is being paid until 2025 due to the need to complete the leasehold improvements.
