DescriptionGrantsExpenses
In 2024, CURE5 raised $192k to advance research and therapeutic development for CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder. The Foundation paid $14k to Unravel Biosciences which provided specialized scientific services supporting preclinical research. Specifically, Unravel Biosciences leveraged its AI-driven RNA analysis for a rapid drug repurposing screen. The data collected will be used in partnership with other CURE5 grantees. In addition, the Foundation designed and launched its grantmaking framework, identified research collaborators, and initiated planning for larger research grants to be awarded in 2025. These activities represent the Foundation's first year of programmatic operations in pursuit of its exempt purpose of supporting scientific discovery and treatments for CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder. The principal project funded in 2025 will be an iPSC portfolio with Boston Children's and building on our repurposing work with several other partners.$0$14,000

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990-EZ, Part I, Line 13

Line 13 includes $14,000 paid to Unravel Biosciences for scientific services to generate datasets to support drug repurposing and potentially development. This represents the first payment, the second of which will be due in 2025.

Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line (28-31)

Of the $192k raised in 2024, a single extraordinary contribution of $150,000 accounted for the majority of total support. This contribution was critical in launching the Foundation's mission but temporarily skews the public support calculation for this year. The Foundation also received contributions from a range of smaller donors and is actively expanding its donor base through ongoing fundraising initiatives. Because the public support test is measured over a rolling five-year period, the Foundation anticipates that future years will reflect a more balanced mix of contributions, bringing the organization well within the thresholds required to maintain public charity status.

Form 990-EZ, Part III, Line 32

In 2024, Cure CDKL5 Epilepsy Foundation completed its first full year of operations and raised $192k to advance research and treatment for CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder. The Foundation paid $14,000 to Unravel Biosciences for scientific research services directly supporting its exempt purpose. In addition, the Foundation established its grantmaking framework, identified research collaborators, and initiated planning for major grants to be awarded in 2025. These activities represent the Foundation's early programmatic work and reflect its mission to accelerate scientific discovery and therapeutic development for CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder.

IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt0Cure CDKL5 Epilepsy Foundation was formed in October 2023, and 2024 represents its first full year of fundraising. In 2024, the organization received $192,000 in total contributions. A single contribution of $150,000 accounted for the majority of this amount. We are endlessly grateful for this donor's enthusiastic support of our mission. This large donation was an extraordinary, one-time gift made in direct support of the Foundation's exempt purpose of advancing research and treatment for CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder. While it temporarily skews the public support calculation for 2024, the Foundation also received contributions from a broad base of smaller donors during the year. The organization is actively expanding its donor base through ongoing fundraising initiatives, partnerships, and outreach, and anticipates that future contributions will demonstrate a more balanced pattern of public support. Because the public support test is measured over a rolling five-year period, the Foundation fully expects that future years will reflect a more representative donor mix and bring our public support percentage well within the thresholds required under section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi). Accordingly, the organization believes it continues to qualify as a publicly supported charity, or, if necessary, under the 10% facts-and-circumstances test.

ReasonableCauseExplanation/ExplanationTxt0Dear IRS, CURE CDKL5 Epilepsy Foundation was formed in October 2023 and we received our 501(c)(3) designation in February 2024. We filed the required 990 for 2023 on time, having no income or expenses for the year as a newly formed entity. For the 2024 tax year, this was our first time filing a Form 990-EZ with details to track and include. As a new organization, we are still establishing administrative and compliance processes. The delay in filing was due in part to challenges balancing organizational responsibilities with significant personal circumstances. Our Treasurer, who oversees the filing process, had several challenges in 1H 2025, with her husband and first child both hospitalized for several weeks in January, while pregnant with her 2nd child, and gave birth on June 11, 2025. The recovery of her husband and child, and the final months of the pregnancy and the period immediately following delivery created unexpected constraints on the time and attention available to complete the filing by the May 15, 2025 deadline. Once the oversight at submitting an extension filing was realized, we acted promptly to complete and electronically submit the Form 990-EZ. We have also implemented internal procedures to ensure future filings are timely, including setting multiple calendar reminders and engaging an outside tax professional to review deadlines. We respectfully request that the IRS abate any penalties assessed, as the delay was not due to willful neglect but arose from reasonable cause. Sincerely, Aurelie Hasse Secretary & Treasurer, Cure CDKL5 Epilepsy Foundation
