DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Agriculture and aquaculture restoration on Molokai Island at Ohalahala Fishpond and wetland taro and gardens. To date we have restored over 350ft of Ohalahala Fishpond wall conducting monthly workdays with a core group of Molokai experts. Every quarter we hold workdays that are open to the public with about 15 community members per event participating. 1. We have Cleared 1 acre of ancient rock walled wetland taro plots (loi), which includes restoring two rock-walled terraces, the existing water ditch path, and reopened direct access to the stream. We planted 150 taro seedlings which is on track with our goal to open loi and plant 120 taro huli every six months-thus, in constant rotation and at least 240 huli harvested every year. This equals about 600 pounds of taro, most which will be processed into poi. 2. Mala (garden). We continue to clear land and plant, expanding our garden as well as enclosing it with 4-6ft high chainlink fence to protect it from invasive ungulates, pig and deer-due to an island-wide drought, which have been decimating our produce. We have distributed free over 1,500 pounds of produce from the garden. We provided over 200 meals to our visitors, sourced from our garden, surrounding lands, and fishpond.$29,265$20,983
Education. In the spring of 2024 we completed construction of a two-stall restroom with sinks and showers on a septic tank system to service visiting school field trips, and other visiting community groups and hosted events. These facilities will allow us to expand our services in providing hands-on immersive educational experiences. Each year we work with groups from all the four elementary schools on Molokai, as well as the two secondary schools, Molokai Intermediate and High School. Services provided to the Molokai Schools include multiple outreach visits to classrooms and larger school assemblies and field trips to Ohalahala Fishpond, Honouliwai Stream and the gardens. We also co-host with student visits via Molokai Digital Bus (mobile science and technology bus). We hosted 18 field trips with 480 students and 120 teachers. We hosted 10 community group events to work in the fishpond and gardens, over 100 participants of all ages. On October 5 & 6 we conducted our first large overnight gathering (with camping and meals provided on-site) of skilled fishpond practitioners to help rebuild the fishpond. We hosted about 30 volunteers from Molokai, 60 from Kauai, 9 from Maui, about 8 from Oahu, and 10 school principals from Hawaii charter schools. With our partner, Ka Hale Hoaka, online Hawaiian learning school, we hosted a two-day professional development Teacher training workshop which participants, mostly Hawaii Dept of Education Charter School teachers and administrators. Lahinaluna High School Song Project. The students of Lahinaluna HS, grades 9-12 (post fire, which destroyed the town of Lahina) traveled to Molokai where they spent 4 days camping, working in the fishpond and gardens and writing songs. Prior to their visit to Molokai, HOK staff conducted 4 in-class workshops at Lahinaluna. The finished song along with a 5-minute highlight video can be found online via popular media platforms (YouTube, Spotify).$26,202$26,202
Lahina Maui Fire Relief Efforts. We received a $20,000 grant, acting as the fiscal sponsors for the Lahina community organization Kaiaulu Initiatives, to help assist in post-fire relief efforts. These monies were used to purchase $21,001 in equipment (a water tank $10,471, irrigation supplies and hand tools, creation of a native plant nursery) in the effort to replace and replant the abandoned, fallow lands above Lahaina which are overrun by invasive plants that fuel wildfires with native plants that will serve as a natural fire break from Lahina town below, downwind.$21,001$21,001
Multimedia Projects. We document all our actitives through video and stills images, posting them to our social scial media sites (FB, IG) along with continually upgrading our web-site (huiokuapa.org). Explorers Video Series; "Ka Hale Hoaka Explores TV," a Hawaiian environmental educational series, hosted on YouTube. Six 25-minute episodes have been produced to date with over 20,000 views. Two new episodes dropped in Spring/Summer 2024. In March 2024 We entered a song for NPR Music's Tiny Desk Contest. The Hookupu Collective gathered back on Molokai to create and record a new song, Imu Stones. It was submitted to for their nationwide talent contest and multi-city concert tour. HOK Produced Hookupu: A Hip Hop anthology of Hawaiian History in October 2022 to major music platforms. We performed the album at La Hoihoi Ea Festival (July 2024), at the East West Center-Pacific Islands Young Leaders Conference (Feb 2024) and at The Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture (Festpac) in June 2024. Our Molokai Nui a Hina Mural Project hosts and teaches storytelling and art for our community. We have produced the first set of mural prints for the high school and created a virtual gallery on-line.$6,508$6,508
