“Program service accomplishments”

“Our 2018/2019 "Stand UP & Speak Out! Videos for Social Justice Residency" involved Southeast Middle School (SEMS) students in civic engagements through the process of collaboratively creating short videos promoting media literacy and human rights in their school, their community and beyond. The residency workshops included research, story-sharing, critical thinking, diversity awareness and team-building exercises, creative brainstorming, improvisation, writing between people with different points of view. In fall 2018, the students examined the diverse ways news is shaped and communicated to the public, and learned how to discern the difference between fact-based and fake news. The youth then created short videos designed to equip their peers with similar media literacy and critical analysis skills, and to inspire them to become civically engaged. In spring 2019, the youth studied the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" and considered the relevance of the rights articulated therein to their own lives and to the lives of other individuals in their community and throughout the world. Each student selected an issue he or she cares about deeply, and worked in small groups to create videos promoting constructive action to address those issues. At the end of both semesters, the youth shared their videos with their peers in all-school assemblies, with their families in after-school gatherings, and with the wider communith through the web.”
