Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

Form 990 was reviewed and approved by the audit committee, consisting of three board members, before filing. The organization emailed each member of the governing body the organization's final form 990 prior to its filing with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Board members sign annual conflict of interest representation letters.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The compensation committee, a subset of the iea board of directors, has general oversight of the organization's human resource plan. The committee meets independent of the president to discuss performance relative to the position description and the established goals. Comparable salary surveys are reviewed at a minimum of every three years to benchmark compensation for the position. The committee presents its findings and recommendations, in an executive session without the president present, to the board for review and approval. The committee and/or the board chair then meet with the president to discuss and document strengths, weaknesses, and goals for the upcoming year.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, form 990 and financial statements are available to the public upon request.

IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartIVGrp/ExplanationTxt0THE INSTITUTE SATISFIES THE FACTS-AND-CIRCUMSTANCES TEST OF TREASURY REGULATION 1.170A-9(E)(3) AND QUALIFIES AS PUBLICLY SUPPORTED UNDER SECTIONS 509(A)(1) AND 170(B)(1)(A)(VI) OF THE INTERNAL REVENUE CODE FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: 1. TEN-PERCENT-OF-SUPPORT LIMITATION THE INSTITUTE'S PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR THE CURRENT PERIOD IS 20.1%, SIGNIFICANTLY ABOVE THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENT OF 10% TO QUALIFY THE INSTITUTE UNDER THE FACTS-AND-CIRCUMSTANCES TEST. 2. ATTRACTION OF PUBLIC SUPPORT THE INSTITUTE ACTIVELY SOLICITS CONTRIBUTIONS FROM INDIVIDUALS, PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS, AND CORPORATE SPONSORS. AMONG OTHER THINGS, THE INSTITUTE MAINTAINS A PUBLICLY ACCESSIBLE WEBSITE THAT DISCUSSES AT LENGTH THE INSTITUTE'S PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES AND CONTAINS A SPECIAL "DONATE NOW" BUTTON. THE INSTITUTE RECOGNIZES ITS DONORS' GENEROSITY WITH SEVEN HONOR CLASSIFICATIONS, RANGING FROM "CONTRIBUTORS" FOR THOSE WHO DONATE UP TO $999, TO "FOUNDERS CIRCLE" FOR THOSE WHO CONTRIBUTE $150,000 AND HIGHER. IN ADDITION, WHEN DONORS COMMIT IN ADVANCE TO A CONSECUTIVE THREE-YEAR PLEDGE TO THE INSTITUTE, THEY ARE INDUCTED INTO THE INSTITUTE'S NAUTILUS SOCIETY. A LIST OF OVER 200 DONORS TO THE INSTITUTE CAN BE FOUND AT WWW.EDUCATIONALADVANCEMENT.ORG. 3. PERCENTAGE OF FINANCIAL SUPPORT THE INSTITUTE'S 20.1% PUBLIC-SUPPORT PERCENTAGE IS WELL ABOVE THE 10% FLOOR AND REFLECTS THE FACT THAT THE ORGANIZATION RECEIVES SIGNIFICANT AND WIDESPREAD PUBLIC SUPPORT. THE INSTITUTE IS WORKING ACTIVELY TO BROADEN ITS SOURCES OF SUPPORT TO INCREASE ITS PUBLIC-SUPPORT PERCENTAGE IN THE COMING YEARS. 4. SOURCES OF SUPPORT THE INSTITUTE RECEIVES FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM A WIDE RANGE OF UNRELATED INDIVIDUAL DONORS AND FOUNDATIONS, AS DEMONSTRATED BY THE LIST OF EIGHT MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS ON SCHEDULE B. IN ADDITION TO THE SUPPORT DISCLOSED ON SCHEDULE B, THE INSTITUTE RECEIVES SMALLER CONTRIBUTIONS FROM MANY OTHER INDIVIDUAL DONORS. TO SUPPORT ITS WORK WITH GIFTED YOUNG PEOPLE, THE INSTITUTE RELIES HEAVILY ON ITS VOLUNTEER CORPS. THE ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF OUR VOLUNTEERS VARY WIDELY DEPENDING ON THEIR SKILLS AND EXPERTISE AND ON THE INSTITUTE'S NEEDS. FOR EXAMPLE, PROFESSIONALS WHO ARE RESPECTED IN THEIR FIELDS VOLUNTEER FOR THREE TO SIX WEEKS DURING EACH SUMMER TO MENTOR GIFTED STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THE INSTITUTE'S APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM. ALSO, THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, PROFESSIONALS FROM VARIOUS FIELDS DONATE THEIR TIME TO GIVE INSPIRATIONAL LECTURES TO GIFTED STUDENTS, PARENTS, TEACHERS AND ADMINISTRATORS PARTICIPATING IN THE INSTITUTE'S PARENT SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS AND GUEST EVENTS. THE INSTITUTE ACTIVELY SOLICITS VOLUNTEER SUPPORT THROUGH ITS WEBSITE, AS WELL AS BY DIRECT SOLICITATIONS. THE CAROLINE D. BRADLEY SCHOLARSHIP SELECTION COMMITTEE IS COMPRISED OF VOLUNTEERS FROM PUBLIC AND PRIVATE HIGH SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITIES FROM AROUND THE COUNTRY. IEA HAS TWO TO THREE COMMITTEES EACH YEAR, MADE UP OF EIGHT TO TEN ADMISSIONS DIRECTORS, SCHOOL HEADS AND UNIVERSITY LEADERSHIP. 5. REPRESENTATIVE GOVERNING BODY THE INSTITUTE'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS CONSISTS OF TEN DIRECTORS FROM DIVERSE PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUNDS, INCLUDING LAW, FINANCE, AND EDUCATION. NINE OF THESE TEN DIRECTORS ARE NOT OTHERWISE RELATED TO THE INSTITUTE. THE INSTITUTE ENCOURAGES ALL ITS DIRECTORS TO CONTRIBUTE BOTH TIME AND MONEY TO THE ORGANIZATION. 6. AVAILABILITY OF PUBLIC FACILITIES OR SERVICES THE INSTITUTE'S PROGRAMS ARE AVAILABLE TO ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC AND INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM: THIS THREE-TO-FOUR WEEK RESIDENTIAL SUMMER PROGRAM PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR 40 STUDENTS, CAPABLE OF WORKING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, TO WORK WITH ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS IN AN AREA OF INTEREST. CAROLINE D. BRADLEY SCHOLARSHIP: THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR UP TO 60 GIFTED STUDENTS TO DEVELOP TO THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL BY ATTENDING A SCHOOL THAT WILL BEST MEET THEIR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS. THE SCHOLARSHIP COVERS THE COST OF TUITION AND BOOKS THROUGHOUT EACH SCHOLAR'S HIGH SCHOOL YEARS. Y
