Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 5

During the year, on April 7 and May 7, there were break-ins into the organization's office (when it was closed due to the pandemic) and equipment was stolen with a net book value of $4,638. The Los Angeles police department has been notified; we are waiting receipt of the police report. Once that is in hand, we will follow up with our insurance carrier; our insurance policy should cover the loss, subject to a $500 deductible. Following the break-ins, in order to reduce the risk of recurrence, we have teamed up with our neighbors to install more than a dozen high-quality security cameras throughout the building. Every room and hallway can be viewed remotely. We receive alerts on any activity throughout the building and will be keeping watch on our spaces. In addition, the building owner has installed lights and a security camera in the lobby. He also sealed a window. Additionally, we installed better locks on our doors.

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, line 8B

Part VI, question 8(b) was answered no as there were no committees that had the authority to act on behalf of the board.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 11B

A draft return was reviewed by the board chair, treasurer, executive director, and internal accountant. Any comments will be discussed with outside CPA and any necessary changes will be made to the return prior to filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12

All board members are vetted for conflict of interest issues. They receive a packet that includes the conflict of interest policy and during their interview with the board chair, this is discussed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15

Question 15(b) is answered no as there are no other officers or key employees as defined in the IRS instructions who received compensation.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19

Governing documents, conflict of interest policy statement, and internal financials are available upon request.

Additional Explanations

PArt I, line 1

We teach music, writing, fashion - ALL the arts, and provide cultural field trips that enable young people ages 3 to 24 to build confidence and learn new skills.

Part III, line 4(A)

Cultural Journeys: Additional field trips included "Son of the Wind" at Ford Amphitheater, Cirque du Soleil's "Volta," KINKY with M.I.S, "Matilda: The Musical," screenings of "Jumanji," Circus Vargas and "Falls & Flamenco." Many youth now want to explore more of the world they live in and discover new opportunities. Visual Arts: Children at A Community of Friends and SFV Rescue Mission loved arts and crafts. Runaway teens at Angel's Flight painted a mural. During Covid-19, poor children in DTLA made fun arts projects.

part III, line 4(C)

Our 5th Annual Power of the Arts Festival in DTLA enabled kids of all ages to perform in a Talent Show and receive gifts, paint a mural, play drums, make arts and crafts, eat delicious food, enjoy Spiderman, balloon art, face painting and more. Santa gave out wonderful toys to marginalized kids and they got to make jewelry, holiday decorations, play musical instruments and sing karaoke. During Covid-19, Create Now distributed thousand of masks, sanitizers, diapers, formula, wipes, soap, clothes, shampoo and toys to the neediest families.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0We teach music, writing, fashion - ALL the arts, and provide cultural field trips that enable young people ages 3 to 24 to build confidence and learn new skills.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Cultural Journeys: Additional field trips included "Son of the Wind" at Ford Amphitheater, Cirque du Soleil's "Volta," KINKY with M.I.S, "Matilda: The Musical," screenings of "Jumanji," Circus Vargas and "Falls & Flamenco." Many youth now want to explore more of the world they live in and discover new opportunities. Visual Arts: Children at A Community of Friends and SFV Rescue Mission loved arts and crafts. Runaway teens at Angel's Flight painted a mural. During Covid-19, poor children in DTLA made fun arts projects.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2Our 5th Annual Power of the Arts Festival in DTLA enabled kids of all ages to perform in a Talent Show and receive gifts, paint a mural, play drums, make arts and crafts, eat delicious food, enjoy Spiderman, balloon art, face painting and more.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3During the year, on April 7 and May 7, there were break-ins into the organization's office (when it was closed due to the pandemic) and equipment was stolen with a net book value of $4,638.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4Part VI, question 8(b) was answered no as there were no committees that had the authority to act on behalf of the board.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5A draft return was reviewed by the board chair, treasurer, executive director, and internal accountant. Any comments will be discussed with outside CPA and any necessary changes will be made to the return prior to filing.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt6All board members are vetted for conflict of interest issues. They receive a packet that includes the conflict of interest policy and during their interview with the board chair, this is discussed.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt7Question 15(b) is answered no as there are no other officers or key employees as defined in the IRS instructions who received compensation.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt8Governing documents, conflict of interest policy statement, and internal financials are available upon request.
