Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The alfred mann foundation is a medical research organization dedicated to bringing advanced medical technologies to the public to provide significant improvements to the health, security and quality of life for people suffering from debilitating medical conditions.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Implantable pain pump: in december 2009, amf purchased the assets of a company called infusion systems. The assets included, among other things, the intellectual property and hard assets/equipment necessary to build an implantable infusion pump that can be used to pump various pharmaceutical products into the human body safely and accurately. The initial application is for pain management using morphine. Status: the foundation submitted and the fda approved an ide application to start a human clinical trial for pain management using infumorph. Fourteen patients were implanted with pumps at five separate centers, the carolinas pain institute, uc san diego, spectrum care pain treatment center, millennium pain center, center for pain and supporting care. In parallel, system components and accessory inventory was built to support the 75 patient human trial. On an ongoing basis, various engineering projects were in development focusing on: a new tablet programing platform and two new pump designs, one with a small drug reservoir and one with a larger reservoir.
Activity 3
Febpm: the function electrical stimulation battery powered microstimulator (febpm) program (formerly the battery powered microstimulator (bpm) program) is the development of the next-generation microstimulator system. It is designed for a wide range of medical applications including localized individual muscle control and orchestrated muscle group control. The present microstimulator (rfm - see below) is powered and controlled through an external rf field and only a few microstimulators can be controlled at once using a control algorithm installed on a pc and utilizing limited activity sequences. By contrast, the febpm implant has its own power supply which can be recharged as needed and then can operate for periods of time. Numerous febpm's can be communicated with and controlled using one external controller. Future versions of the febpm system may also contain sensors capable of communicating back to the controller to deliver various types of information used for system operation.status: a major milestone was reached during 2011 when the fcc issued an order enabling the foundation to share a small range of radio frequency in harmony with the existing users. This approval in conjunction with effectively securing a couple of key component suppliers has allowed the program to once again move forward. The major challenges remaining focus on the devices final qualification testing and determination of the initial clinical trial application.

IRS990/Activity2/Description0IMPLANTABLE PAIN PUMP: IN DECEMBER 2009, AMF PURCHASED THE ASSETS OF A COMPANY CALLED INFUSION SYSTEMS.

IRS990/Activity3/Description0FEBPM: THE FUNCTION ELECTRICAL STIMULATION BATTERY POWERED MICROSTIMULATOR (FEBPM) PROGRAM (FORMERLY THE BATTERY POWERED MICROSTIMULATOR (BPM) PROGRAM) IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEXT-GENERATION MICROSTIMULATOR SYSTEM.

IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0NEW PROJECTS: A) ICPM: INITIAL DEVELOPMENT WORK BEGAN ON A NEW TECHNOLOGY ALLOWING THE MONITORING OF INTERCRANIAL PRESSURE. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO COUPLE A PRESSURE SENSOR TO THE INTRA-VENTRICULAR CATHETER OF A HYDROCEPHALUS SHUNT IN ORDER TO MONITOR INTRACRANIAL CSF PRESSURE IN REAL TIME, TO MONITOR THE ADEQUACY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF INDIVIDUAL PATIENTS' SHUNT OPERATION, AND TO PROTECT THE HEALTH OF SHUNT PATIENTS. THE MAJOR AREA OF FOCUS DURING THE INITIAL FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS IS DRIFT THAT RESULTS FROM VARIOUS FORCES PLACED ON THE SENSOR. OVER TIME THE BUILT IN FORCES CAUSE THE OUTPUT TO DRIFT AND RESULT IN INACCURATE READINGS.STATUS: A POTENTIAL LICENSEE HAS BEEN LOCATED, AND AMF HAS FILED JOINTLY WITH THIS COMPANY FOR GRANT FUNDING TO ADVANCE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS PROGRAM. IF THE GRANT IS RECEIVED AND COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY, IT IS LIKELY THAT THE PARTNER COMPANY WILL EITHER OPTION OR LICENSE THE ICPM PROGRAM TECHNOLOGY. IF THIS DOES NOT OCCUR, AMF DOES NOT INTEND TO CONTINUE FUNDING FOR THIS PROGRAM. B) AP: THE ARTIFICIAL PANCREAS DEVELOPMENT PATH CONSISTS OF SEVERAL STEPS CULMINATING IN A FULLY IMPLANTABLE, CLOSED-LOOP, AUTONOMOUS ARTIFICIAL ENDOCRINE PANCREAS. SUCH A SYSTEM WILL MAINTAIN BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS IN DIABETICS TO NORMAL RANGE WITHOUT RISK OF HYPOGLYCEMIA (LOW BLOOD GLUCOSE). FOUR MAJOR COMPONENTS CONSTITUTE THE AP SYSTEM: AN IMPLANTABLE PUMP DELIVERING INSULIN TO THE INTRAPERITONEAL SPACE, INSULIN WHICH IS STABLE AT BODY TEMPERATURE, AN IMPLANTABLE GLUCOSE SENSOR, AND A CONTROL ALGORITHM.STATUS: AFTER SIGNIFICANT DUE DILIGENCE ON VARIOUS SENSOR TECHNOLOGIES AND CONTROL ALGORITHMS, EFFORTS TO OBTAIN EXTERNAL FUNDING ON TERMS SATISFACTORY TO AMF WERE ULTIMATELY NOT SUCCESSFUL. A DECISION WAS MADE TO TERMINATE ACTIVE DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS RELATING TO THIS PROGRAM, BUT FOR THE LIMITED EFFORTS OF ONE EMPLOYEE WHO IS ATTEMPTING TO GATHER FINANCIAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL SUPPORT FOR A DEVELOPMENT EFFORT THAT LIKELY WOULD BE CARRIED ON IN A NEWLY-LAUNCHED STARTUP ENTITY THAT WOULD BE FUNDED BY THIRD PARTIES AND WHICH WOULD LICENSE AP-RELATED INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY FROM AMF. RFM: THE RADIO FREQUENCY MICROSTIMULATOR (RFM) IS A SYSTEM OF DEVICES INTENDED TO STIMULATE NERVES TO CONTROL MUSCLE MOVEMENT IN PATIENTS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED A DEBILITATING MUSCLE/NERVE INJURY OR DISEASE. THE SYSTEM CONSISTS OF IMPLANTED MICROSTIMULATORS, SURGICAL TOOLS USED TO IMPLANT THE MICROSTIMULATORS, EXTERNAL COMPONENTS USED TO POWER THE IMPLANTED MICROSTIMULATORS (A CONTROL UNIT AND RF COIL), AND A LAPTOP WITH CUSTOM SOFTWARE USED TO PROGRAM THE MICROSTIMULATORS. STATUS: IN CONNECTION WITH THE PREVIOUS FEASIBILITY STUDY, ENGINEERING WORK WAS PERFORMED TO ENHANCE SYSTEM FEATURES AND FUNCTIONALITY REQUIRED TO MEET USER NEEDS. ENGINEERING AND REGULATORY ACTIVATES HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT TO SUPPORT A IDE SUBMISSIONS FOR A CLINICAL STUDY FOR ARM REHAB DUE TO TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY. WE HAVE IMPLANTED THE FIRST PATIENT IN THE TRIAL AT THE TAMPA VA.
