Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Copies of the completed form 990 are forwarded to all board members. The president reviews key areas with the board before the form is finalized and filed.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

All members of the board of directors are required to annually complete and sign a conflict of interest representation disclosing any conflicts of interest. The conflict of interest forms are then reviewed by the business manager for disclosure purposes and identified conflicts, if any, are communicated to the finance committee and board. A trustee shall not participate in any discussion or vote on the board or any committee or subcommittee of the board, if the discussion or vote concerns a matter in which the trustee has an actual or potential conflict of interest.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

The executive committee of the board determines and approves director compensation, using statistics from ism (independent school management), an organization for independent schools, as a benchmark. Review of compensation is conducted every year in may.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 18

Forms 1023 and 990 are available for public inspection upon request.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The school does not make its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, or financial statements available to the public.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The school's endowment fund was established to ensure financial stability and sustainability by providing an enduring source of financial aid funding that will have a meaningful impact on the day-to-day operations of the school. Its endowment includes only donor-restricted endowment funds. As required by generally accepted accounting principles (gaap), net assets associated with endowment funds, including funds designated by the board of trustees to function as endowments, are classified and reported based on the existence or absence of donor-imposed restrictions.

PART X, LINE 2:

The school is a qualified not-for-profit organization exempt from federal income and california franchise taxes under the provisions of sections 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and 23701(d) of the california revenue and taxation code, respectively. The school has evaluated its current tax positions and has concluded that as of august 31, 2020, the school does not have any significant uncertain tax positions for which a reserve would be necessary.

IRS990/MissionDesc0CCS IS A PROGRESSIVE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN VAN NUYS, CALIFORNIA. FOR OVER 39 YEARS, THE SCHOOL HAS STRESSED HANDS-ON LEARNING, A DIVERSE ENVIRONMENT, AND INVOLVEMENT WITH THE COMMUNITY AROUND IT. CCS'S CURRICULUM PREPARES CHILDREN FOR CITIZENSHIP IN A DEMOCRACY. AT EVERY STEP, WE RELATE STUDY TO LIFE. WE BELIEVE THAT CHILDREN, JUST LIKE ADULTS, LEARN BEST WHEN THEY ARE ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS IN THE WORLD AROUND THEM. WE THEREFORE BEGIN EACH STUDY WITH THE CHILDREN'S KNOWLEDGE AND THEIR QUESTIONS. OUR EDUCATION ALLOWS EACH CHILD TO LEARN AT THEIR OWN PACE, AND TO PURSUE PARTICULAR PASSIONS WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF A COMMUNITY OF LEARNERS. ALL OF THE ENJOYMENT, ENRICHMENT, AND CHALLENGE WORKING WITH OTHERS ARE PART OF THE EXPERIENCE OF EVERY CCS GRADUATE.
