Mission

Through public interest communications and events, the foundation works to improve the environment, reduce the impact of pollution on human health, support the development of sustainable economics and inspire student interest in science, technology, engineering and math, supporting and facilitating "science and education in service to life"

The Foundation works to communicate and highlight strategies and technologies that can improve health, education and the environment. It does this through conferences that enable public and private sector sustainability leaders to share lessons learned and best practices, training on Californias energy and green building codes and editorial content. It also works in partnership with scientists and educators to develop reports, white papers, classroom lessons and other resources.

IRS990/Desc0Green Technology: While the Green Technology initiative was greatly impacted by the pandemic it continued to carry out its mission with some modifications consistent with the needs of the stakeholders and companies that are part of this important work. The Green Technology initiative builds on decades of Foundation engagement in environmental health and environmental policy. Its mission is to support public and private sector efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve building health, conserve resources and create clean and sustainable communities. Green Technology Summits and Forums and Training provide valuable resources to sustainability leaders and decision makers from state and local government, schools and colleges and the private sector. These resources enable major stakeholders in all of these sectors to highlight and disseminate innovations in policy, practice and technology. With the pandemic curtailing in person meetings and conferences, management created a virtual meeting model as well as a new service that connects companies with public sector stakeholders. Sustainable Facilities Forum Based upon input from the advisory board and our stakeholders, management created the forum as a virtual event. The May event reached 180 registrants and had the participation of 12 companies supporting this work as sponsors. Consistent with our years of in person Forums and Summits the event included keynotes and a full day of education sessions covering a wide variety of sustainability topics of interest to private and public sector facility managers, influencers and companies with sustainability solutions. Once again, the Summit was created to support the efforts of those responsible for executing programs in these areas and to share technologies and strategies that have proved to be effective, speeding progress toward the aggressive targets the state has set. Green California School and Community Colleges Summit The 2020 Green California Schools and Community Colleges Summit took place in October as a virtual event. The event attracted 221 attendees and 16 company sponsors offering green products and services. Keynotes and education sessions addressed building health, storm water management, energy and water conservation, environmental literacy and more. The education program reflected a diverse mix of voices sharing best practices and innovations in furtherance of the many sustainability efforts underway and in planning stages across the state. Green Technology also launched a Sustainable Facilities Champions program that is designed to connect companies that meet the needs of our stakeholders by providing products and solutions that help them reach their sustainability goals. This new service provides sponsorship revenue to the Foundation to support the Green Technology initiative. Online Training Series Green Technology continued to offer webinars focused on key issues for sustainability professionals. Green Technology Magazine The magazine continues its publication schedule with twice a month articles being shared digitally by email and online social media. Articles support the Foundation?s sustainability mission and projects.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Improving Mathematics and Science Education: FASE continued to promote its resources for teachers and students as part of the Foundation?s decades long efforts to engage more students in STEM education. Efforts to ramp up these activities began to take shape with FASE management beginning a process to digitize its library of video it has compiled over the years and to further utilize this content to inspire and engage students in Science Technology Engineering and Math. 2022 marks the 40-year anniversary of the famous Jaime Escalante class that brought acclaim to master teacher Jaime Escalante. FASE efforts to digitize and create relevant content that can be shared with educators, students and parents will be followed by a robust outreach and distribution campaign to help educators inspire and engage their students. FASE completed the acquisition of a streaming channel ? The Futures Channel as part of its efforts to further connect stakeholders in the STEM education ecosystem. This channel, launched by FASE founding board member Steve Heard is central to FASE?s current program efforts to inspire and engage young people from diverse backgrounds into the STEM education pipeline. This streaming service makes it possible for FASE to continue to impact STEM education with a greatly enhanced and economical way to reach stakeholders and students everywhere. FASE is seeking grants and collaborations to further this program effort and is creating teacher training modules that help teachers use this resource and further their efforts to engage their students in STEM studies.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0Environmental Health: For more than three decades, the Foundation has engaged in projects addressing the problem of chemical body burden?the accumulation of environmental chemicals in fat and blood. It has come to play a unique and vital role in efforts to bring relief to those affected by toxic exposures from the environment or the workplace through a detoxification regimen involving exercise, sauna, vitamin and mineral supplements and other elements. In 2020, FASE associates continued to provide consulting, scientific support and editorial services for projects implementing detoxification as a rehabilitative therapy. FASE continues to provide scientific support for a project in Vietnam helping Vietnamese citizens affected by exposures to the defoliant Agent Orange. The work in Vietnam builds on ongoing efforts by the Foundation to help increase understanding of the health effects associated with toxic exposures on the battlefield, and the treatment options available to help affected veterans regain the quality life they enjoyed before their exposures. In the fall of 2019 FASE President Keith Miller and FASE Senior Research Associate Bob Graves visited Vietnam. Key meetings were held in Danang, Thai Binh, and Hanoi with officials who have requested Foundation support in documenting outcomes in centers throughout Vietnam that have implemented the Hubbard detox program to improve quality of life of those who may have been exposed to dioxin and other toxic chemicals. In 2020 FASE participated in online workshops to help the Vietnamese professionals who are implementing the detox program and provided expertise as well as equipment to facility sharing information virtually due to the pandemic. In 2020 FASE has also continued to respond to requests for information and support from military, veteran and the scientific community interested in seeing that detoxification as a choice can be made available to service personnel who may benefit from the program as a means to restore quality of life for those impacted by service related exposures. In late 2020 an Army funded study was published in additional peer reviewed journals detailing the results of a pilot study conducted by 3 Universities reporting results of the Hubbard detox program on veterans who served in the first Gulf War.
