Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

Form 990 is reviewed by the audit committee and then provided to all members of the board of trustees for any comments or questions prior to finalization. Schedule b is excluded from the distribution.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Conflict of interest forms submitted by members of the board of trustees at the beginning of each year are collected and reviewed by the head of school's administrative assistant. Officers and trustees are required to inform the chairperson of the board if there are any new conflicts of interest during the school year.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

Initial hiring compensation for the head of school is determined by hiring an independent consultant to survey other like schools and research national statistics to determine an appropriate compensation package. Subsequent contracts are approved by the board of trustees from the recommendation of the head review committee and are based on a survey of other like schools and research of national statistics to determine appropriate compensation. Compensation for the cfo is determined by the head of school, surveying other peer schools and local and national benchmarks.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements are available to the public upon written request.

Supplemental Narrative

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The hope e. Boyd endowment fund consists of donor-restricted endowment funds. Its purpose is to support the flexible tuition program of the school. The board of trustees has in addition designated unrestricted funds to function as the landis green faculty innovation fund. Its purpose is to make grants to faculty who seek to engage in self-directed summer research and exploration projects in relation to board approved strategic program priorities. The kramer family fund for experiential equity was established by a gift in 2022. The purpose of the fund is to provide additional financial support to students whose families participate in the flexible tuition program to cover the costs of ancillary, school-related expenses that are not covered by tuition. The wildwood outreach fellowship fund was established in 2023 by a gift from the cynthia and george mitchell foundation. The purpose of the fund is to support professional development at wildwood and other educational organizations through the wildwood outreach center.

PART X, LINE 2:

The school has been granted exemption from income tax under sections 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and 23701(d) of the california revenue and taxation code. Generally accepted accounting principles provide accounting and disclosure guidance about positions taken by an organization in its tax returns that might be uncertain. Management has considered its tax positions and believes all of the positions taken by the school are more likely than not to be sustained upon examination. The returns are subject to examination by federal and state taxing authorities generally three and four years, respectively, after they are filed.

IRS990/Desc0WILDWOOD PROVIDES PRIVATE SCHOOL EDUCATION TO 728 STUDENTS. A KEY COMPONENT OF THE SCHOOL'S CURRICULUM IS SERVICE TO COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. EVERY YEAR, STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO DEVELOP, PARTICIPATE, AND FOSTER PUBLIC SERVICE PROJECTS. THIS COMPONENT IS REQUIRED TO MATRICULATE FROM ONE GRADE TO THE NEXT AND TO GRADUATE FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL IN 12TH GRADE. THESE PROJECTS VARY FROM SERVING IN LOCAL COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS TO FUNDRAISING FOR INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN CAUSES. THE REQUIRED HOURS FROM EACH STUDENT VARIES BY GRADE AND PROJECT WITH A MINIMUM OF 45 HOURS TO A MAXIMUM OF 120 HOURS FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR. THE SCHOOL ALSO HAS AN INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT PROGRAM WHERE STUDENTS TRAVEL ABROAD AND PERFORM COMMUNITY SERVICE IN UNDERDEVELOPED COUNTRIES. WILDWOOD'S STUDENTS COME FROM ECONOMICALLY, CULTURALLY AND ETHNICALLY DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS. THE BOARD IS COMMITTED TO KEEPING THE SCHOOL ACCESSIBLE TO FAMILIES FROM A VARIETY OF SOCIOECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS. THE SCHOOL'S FLEXIBLE TUITION PROGRAM PROVIDES FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO FAMILIES WHO WOULD OTHERWISE NOT HAVE ACCESS TO AN INDEPENDENT SCHOOL EDUCATION. IN 2023-2024, THE AMOUNT OF FLEXIBLE TUITION AS A PERCENTAGE OF TOTAL TUITION REVENUE WAS 16% AND SERVED 21% OF OUR STUDENT POPULATION.
