Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The La Jolla Symphony and Chorus Association (the "Association") was organized in 1957 under the Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law for public and charitable purposes. The mission of the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus is to enrich the cultural life of San Diego through professional-caliber, financially accessible concerts of ground-breaking, traditional and contemporary classical music. The LJS&C provides educational outreach to the community by bringing students to open rehearsals, concerts and music clinics. Through our Young Artists Competition and Thomas Nee Commission for new compositions, we also provide young musicians and composers with rare professional performance opportunities.The Association sponsors an annual Young Artist Competition. The contest is open to singers and instrumentalists ages 8 to 28 from around San Diego County and Baja California. In addition, the music outreach program provides local area schools and students with a variety of performances, workshops

The 990 gets reviewed by the Board treasurer, president and finance committee for approval. Board members receive an email copy of the 990 and audit when complete.

Conflict of Interest Policy is part of the By-laws. By-laws are reviewed annually. Also, an annual board self-assessment is performed to make sure we remain in compliance with our by-laws.

The budget committee (and expanded version of the finance committee) meets annually to draft a budget for board review. Salaries are a part of this budget. The budget must be passed by board vote. Interested parties recuse themselves from the vote.

Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

On an annual basis, the interest and dividends earned on the restricted endowment funds are added to temporarily restricted net assets. The Associations spending policy in regards to these funds is to disburse them for their restricted purpose to meet the current program needs of the Association.

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

The Association is a nonprofit California corporation and is exempt from income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and Section 23701(d) of the California Revenue and Taxation Code on income related to their tax exempt purpose. The Association believes that it has appropriate support for any tax positions taken, and as such, does not have any uncertain tax positions that are material to the financial statements. The Association is not a private foundation.The Associations Return of Organization Exempt from Income Tax for the years ended June 30, 2014, 2013, 2012 and 2011 are subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service and State taxing authorities, generally three to four years after the returns were filed.

IRS990/MissionDesc0The La Jolla Symphony and Chorus Association (the "Association") was organized in 1957 under the Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law for public and charitable purposes. The mission of the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus is to enrich the cultural life of San Diego through professional-caliber, financially accessible concerts of ground-breaking, traditional and contemporary classical music. The LJS&C provides educational outreach to the community by bringing students to open rehearsals, concerts and music clinics. Through our Young Artists Competition and Thomas Nee Commission for new compositions, we also provide young musicians and composers with rare professional performance opportunities.The Association sponsors an annual Young Artist Competition. The contest is open to singers and instrumentalists ages 8 to 28 from around San Diego County and Baja California.
