Sdmoms cultural resources total over 400,000 ethnographic biological and archaeological objects, nearly 50,000 photographic images, and 33,000 scientific publications. IRS990/Desc0IN FISCAL YEAR 2019, SDMOM WELCOMED OVER 180,000 VISITORS THROUGH ITS DOORS. MIDWAY THROUGH THE YEAR, THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO BEGAN ITS SEISMIC RETROFIT PROJECT TO FORTIFY AND PRESERVE SDMOMS HISTORIC CALIFORNIA TOWER, ON AN UNEXPECTEDLY EXPEDITED START DATE. (BASED ON PRIOR DISCUSSIONS WITH THE CITY, WE HAD PLANNED FOR THE PROJECT TO BEGIN IN 2020.) THE PROJECT BEGAN IN FEBRUARY 2019 AND CREATED MANY CHALLENGES FOR OUR INSTITUTION DURING THE FISCAL YEAR. SINCE FEBRUARY 2019, CONSTRUCTION HAS RESTRICTED ACCESS TO SOME MUSEUM ENTRANCES AND RESULTED IN TEMPORARY EXHIBIT CLOSURES. ALTHOUGH WE HAVE EXPERIENCED REDUCED PAID ADMISSIONS REVENUE, ORIGINALLY EXPECTED TO REDUCE BY 65%, WE HAVE ONLY SEEN A 44% LOSS THUS FAR. THIS BETTER-THAN-EXPECTED PERFORMANCE HELPS HIGHLIGHT OUR ADAPTABILITY IN TIMES OF ADVERSITY AND OUR ABILITY TO ATTRACT VISITORS IN SPITE OF APPEARING AS A CONSTRUCTION ZONE AND TEMPORARY EXHIBIT CLOSURES. THE PROJECT WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE A FINANCIAL IMPACT THROUGH FISCAL YEAR 2020, BUT WE HAVE STRATEGICALLY GROWN OUR RESERVES FOR YEARS IN ANTICIPATION OF THIS PROJECT. IN JUNE 2019, SDMOM ENDED ITS FY19 WITH A SIGNFICANT DEFICIT. THE DEFICIT WAS DUE TO THE IMPACT OF THE CALIFORNIA TOWER SEISMIC RETROFIT PROJECT, WHICH AFFECTED EVERY ASPECT OF OUR OPERATIONS. IN PARTICULAR, CONSTRUCTION, ENTRANCE AND EXHIBIT CLOSURES, AND REDUCED ADMISSIONS REVENUE ASSOCIATED WITH THE CALIFORNIA TOWER SEISMIC RETROFIT PROJECT CAUSED A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN ADMISSIONS. SEPARATELY, SDMOM EXPENDED FINANCIAL RESOURCES PREPARING FOR THIS PROJECT AND THE CITYS PLAZA DE PANAMA PROJECT, DESIGNED TO ADD PARKING AND RETURN BALBOA PARK TO ITS PEDESTRIAN-ONLY STATUS. ALTHOUGH THE PLAZA DE PANAMA PROJECT NEVER CAME TO FRUITION, SDMOM HAD TO MAKE FINANCIAL INVESTMENTS IN PREPARATION FOR THE PROJECT FAR IN ADVANCE OF THE PLAZA DE PANAMA PROJECT. ULTIMATELY, THOSE WERE WORTHWHILE INVESTMENTS THAT HELP FORTIFY OUR CULTURAL RESOURCE DEPARTMENTS CAPACITY TO PROPERLY STEWARD THE ITEMS UNDER OUR PURVIEW. OUR OPERATING DEFICIT IS ALSO A PRODUCT OF LONG-OVERDUE STRATEGIC INVESTMENTS IN THE FUTURE VISION OF OUR INSTITUTION. EVEN THOUGH THIS HAS INCURRED SHORT-TERM COSTS, THE INVESTMENTS ARE NECESSARY FOR OUR LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY AS WE DEVELOP A MASTER PLAN FOR A REIMAGINED VISITOR EXPERIENCE.EXHIBITS
