Each spring, the executive committee of the board of trustees reviews data comparing compensation for the head of school, other officers and key employees to data generated through the nais stats online system. National data is reviewed, as well as data for 16 other los angeles area independent schools with a high school. The chief finance and operations officer works with the head of the school and other members of senior management to draft the operating budget, which includes salaries of other key employees. The budget is presented to the asset management committee which reviews and presents it to the board. The head of the school has a written employment agreement. The process described here was last completed in 2024.

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The process for oversight and selection of an independent accountant has not changed from the prior year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART II, LINE 5:

The easement is between the owner of the property and pasadena heritage. The easement grants pasadena heritage the right to inspect the property once a year to ensure that the property is being maintained and that it has not been modified or tampered with. The date of inspection is by mutual agreement.

PART II, LINE 9:

The easement covers a greene & greene house that was acquired in july, 2013 as a residence for the head of school. There is a historic preservation easement with pasadena heritage. The purchase of the property was recorded as an addition to property. The value of the easement is included in the value of the land. The easement provides for annual inspections by pasadena heritage. There is no revenue associated with the easement. Maintenance costs of the property are recorded as expense.

PART IV, LINE 2B:

The school has a number of custodial accounts for various purposes, including parent council, thr fund for partner for success, and various clubs.

PART V, LINE 4:

The school has several endowment funds for various purposes, including funding of scholarships, faculty development and enrichment, science curriculum, technology, and general operations.

PART X, LINE 2:

The school has been granted exemption from income tax under sections 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and 23701(d) of the california revenue and taxation code. Accounting principles generally accepted in the united states of america provide accounting and disclosure guidance about positions taken by an organization in its tax returns that might be uncertain. Management has considered its tax positions and believes all of the positions taken by the school are more likely than not to be sustained upon examination.

IRS990/Desc0WESTRIDGE IS AN INDEPENDENT FORWARD-THINKING GIRLS' SCHOOL IN PASADENA, CA COMMITTED TO DEVELOPING INTELLECTUALLY ADVENTUROUS THINKERS AND COURAGEOUS, COMPASSIONATE LEADERS. FOUNDED BY MARY LOWTHER RANNEY IN 1913 -- IN THE BACKDROP OF THE SUFFRAGIST MOVEMENT TO GIVE GIRLS ACCESS TO THE RIGORS OF EDUCATION THEIR BROTHERS WERE GETTING, WESTRIDGE'S MOTTO IS SURGERE TENTAMUS (WE STRIVE TO RISE); THIS FORWARD-THINKING MISSION CONTINUES TO DRIVE OUR WORK TODAY AS A SCHOOL OF 550 STUDENTS FROM GRADES 4-12. WESTRIDGE IS A SPACE WHERE GIRLS ARE THE MOST POWERFUL VOICES IN EVERY ROOM, THEY ARE EVERY MEMBER OF THE ADVANCED PHYSICS CLASS OR ROCKETRY CLUB, THE MOST CELEBRATED ATHLETES, THE MOST COURAGEOUS AND COMPASSIONATE LEADERS; IT'S A SCHOOL COMMUNITY WHERE GIRLS ARE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE CHANCES, MAKE MISTAKES, THINK DEEPLY, AND GET INVOLVED. WESTRIDGE HAS EMPOWERED GENERATIONS OF GIRLS TO CHALLENGE THE STATUS QUO, IMPROVE THEIR SCHOOL AND THE WORLD AROUND THEM, AND LOOK FOR WAYS TO LEAD AND SERVE THEIR COMMUNITY.WESTRIDGE OFFERS AN INTELLECTUALLY ENGAGING AND CHALLENGING CURRICULUM, A BALANCE OF THE HUMANITIES, MATHEMATICS, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS, AND ATHLETICS. ELECTIVES AND ADVANCED COURSES OF STUDY ALLOW EACH GIRL TO DISCOVER AND THRIVE WITHIN HER AREAS OF INTEREST AND STRENGTH, CULTIVATE CONCEPTUAL AND CRITICAL THINKING, AND INSPIRE DEEP LEARNING AND KNOWLEDGE. THE 70 MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 2024 EARNED 453 ACCEPTANCES TO 153 COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. OUR FACULTY MEMBERS ARE SUBJECT MATTER EXPERTS WHO SPEND A GREAT DEAL OF TIME ON THEIR TEACHING AND LEARNING SO THAT STUDENTS CAN DEEPLY AND AUTHENTICALLY ENGAGE WITH THE CURRICULUM. FACULTY ALSO SERVE AS ADVISORS, GUIDING AND SUPPORTING THE STUDENTS IN THEIR EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM. AT WESTRIDGE, WE KNOW THAT THE HIGHEST QUALITY ACADEMIC PROGRAM IS ONLY VALUABLE IF STUDENTS ARE EMOTIONALLY PREPARED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF ALL THAT OFFERS, AND WE HELP PREPARE STUDENTS FOR LEARNING BY CENTERING THEIR SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING ALONG WITH THEIR SENSE OF INCLUSION AND BELONGING. MYRIAD STUDENT LIFE CLUBS, COMPETITIVE TEAM SPORTS, AND ACTIVITIES GIVE STUDENTS A BALANCE BETWEEN THEIR ACADEMIC AND NONACADEMIC INTERESTS AND LEADERSHIP. IN OUR CLASSROOMS, EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAMS, AND STUDENT-LIFE ACTIVITIES, WE LET STUDENT VOICES LEAD WHENEVER POSSIBLE SO THAT STUDENTS DEVELOP THE AGENCY AND SENSE OF SELF TO PURSUE THEIR PASSIONS AND SUPPORT THE GREATER GOOD. WE ARE NOT JUST READYING GIRLS FOR THE FUTURE WE ARE GIVING THEM THE PRACTICE, CONFIDENCE, AND SELF-CONCEPT THAT WILL SHAPE THE TRAJECTORY OF THEIR LIVES AND ULTIMATELY SHAPE THE FUTURE.
