| The school year ending in June 2024 marked San Francisco Art & Film for Teenagers 31th year of offering Bay Area students free access to arts programming. We were able to serve over 650 students, primarily coming from public high schools in San Francisco. CINE CLUBTwenty-five screenings of classic films were held at The Randall Museum on Fridays between September 2023 and March 2024. Attendance was free and ranged from 40 to 80 students, plus mentors, parents and alumni. Students were introduced the film and its director before beginning each screening. Cine Club films are selected to give students a wide background in the history of serious film and to thrill and excite them about the scope and breath of great filmmaking. The discussions help students explore their ideas in depth. Students are encouraged to share their questions, personal observations, likes and dislikes. Our annual film essay contest was held in April 2024 with cash prizes for the best essays on films screened in Cine Club that year.ART SATURDAYStudents met bi-monthly to tour art galleries and museums or special cultural events with mentors. Following the tour students discussed their experience over a lunch provided by SF Art and Film. Destinations included SFMOMA, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Minnesota Street Project, the Exploratorium, the Silent Film Festival, and downtown SF art galleries.Art Saturday is free of charge and open to any student who is interested in attending. It offers a perfect way for students, especially those from outside San Francisco, to become more familiar and relaxed about moving around the city. It is also an opportunity for students from different schools to meet and make friendships through shared interest in art.FREE TICKETSThroughout the year Art & Film is able to offer free seats to a variety of cultural events. All middle school, high school and college students are eligible. These seats are donated by the cultural institutions, many of which have worked with us since our inception in 1993.Between September 2023 and June 2024, we were able to offer approximately 920 free tickets to SF Bay Area students. Attendance ranged between 15 and 60 students depending on tickets available. Venues included the SF Symphony, the SF Opera, the SF Ballet, the American Conservatory Theater, Word for Word Theater Company, and various film festivals.FILM WORKSHOPEighteen students met 26 times between October 2023 and May 2024. Each workshop meeting ran approximately six hours long, during which students studied and discussed films, developed scripts and prepared their own film shoots. The Film Workshop is our only fee-based program, with 37% of the workshop students receiving scholarship funds. In the summer, we held our annual Summer Film Intensive with 18 students spending nine days studying great works of cinema and making their very first films. Each year, new students are introduced to the fundamentals of professional filmmaking while returning students refine and deepen their skills. “The school year ending in June 2021 marked San Francisco Art & Film for Teenagers 28th year of offering Bay Area students free access to arts programming. We were able to serve over 600 students, primarily coming from public high schools in San Francisco. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of the public spaces we would normally gather, we moved nearly all our programs online. In spite of these challenges, we were able to host our Cine Club programs throughout the school year, gathering student audiences in the range of 40-65 per screening. In place of our Art Saturday tours we produced instructional videos for students on a range of subjects, including important artists, filmmakers and composers though out history. Most of our Free Tickets program institutional partners were shut down by the pandemic but we continued to offer students live-streamed concerts with the San Francisco Symphony followed by discussions with the symphony musicians. The American Conservatory Theater, Cutting Ball Theater, and Open Source Baroque also partnered with us to provide online cultural events to our students with attendance ranging from 10 to 45 students. Our Film Workshop, our sole fee-based program, continued to meet weekly on Sundays over Zoom to teach filmmaking skills, study great works of cinema, and produce students films, with 25% of the workshop students receiving scholarship funds.”
