2016 ActivitiesScientific PresentationsSuperko HR, Garrett B, Reade S, Panholzer G, Snyder C, Schaefer E. Firefighters on the East and West Coasts have Increased CHD Risk Associated with Insulin Resistance and Small LDL. National Lipid Association annual scientific meeting Orlando, Florida 2016.Firefighter Heart Disease Prevention ActivitiesIn 2016 the CGHDI held multiple meetings with members of the Monterey Fire Department to complete the screening of the entire department for subclinical and clinical coronary heart disease that was started in 2015. Data analysis included an executive summary report that was shared with the fire chief and department.Discussions were held with Dr. Arthur Agatston n regard to incorporating his successful South Beach Diet into the Firefighter Heart disease screening program. The South Beach Diet is essentially a Mediterranean diet that is now considered to be the best diet in regard to general heart disease prevention.Community lectures were held to explain the high risk of heart disease in firefighters and the role of noninvasive imaging and advanced blood tests in identifying the firefighters vulnerable to a coronary heart disease event.Discussions were held at the American College of Cardiology annual scientific meeting April 2-5 in regard to the CGHDI efforts on behalf of firefighters.A meeting held at the Nebrasks Heart Institute in October 2016 explained the details of conducting fire department heart disease screening and early implementation was initiated by Nebraska Heart Institute based on the materials and information supplied by the CGHDI.Discussions were held with Boston HeartDx in regard to supporting a National Firefighter Heart Disease screening program by providing access to sophisticated blood tests at research pricing and allow a wider reach for screening programs based on the CGHDI efforts and materials but conducted by local medical advocates. The Seaside Fire department was contacted and following a series of meetings with the fire chief and his lieutenant, the department was screened over a 4-month period in 2016 and extending into 2017. Debriefing meetings were held to discuss the general (deidentified) results as well as individual discussions with firefighters who revealed a high-risk status based on the blood and imaging tests. As part of the program, expenses were incurred for the noninvasive heart CT scan tests obtained at local imaging facilities.A Trifold firefighter heart disease document was created specifically for the Seaside fire department. Powerpoint slide presentations were updated and presented at several lay and professional lectures. Web siteThe web site was updated with special reference to the Monterey and Seaside firefighter screening. Various updates were included.OtherParticipation in SHAPE (Society for Heart Attack Prevention and Eradication) activities continued. A primary focus was creating a grant addressing improved CHD risk determination utilizing noninvasive imaging. Activities included participation in lectures during the annual board meeting that highlighted the firefighter heart disease problem.2017 GoalsExplore the potential to screen the Salinas Fire service for subclinical CHD and metabolic/genetic disorders linked to CHD risk.Describe and explain the purpose of the Firefighter Heart Disease screening program to interested medical groups and fire departmemnts.Explore expansion of the Firefighter Heart Disease Prevention program to sites across the USA.Enhance web site presence and functionality.Analyze screening program data.Submit and present analysis of the data at scientific/medical meetings.--
