“Full mission statement: founded in 1972, during the height of the asian american cultural movement, kearny street workshop (ksw) is the oldest asian pacific american multidisciplinary arts organization in the country. Through collaborations with other arts organizations and cultural communities, both locally and nationally, ksw provides a forum for asian american artists of different media to reach a wide, diverse audience. The american jazz festival, started by ksw in 1981 flourishes to the present day. The struggles of the neighborhood defined the art produced by ksw members: low-income housing, strikes by garment and electrical union workers, and eviction of the elderly tenants of the international hotel. Ksw offers classes and workshops, salons, and student presentations, as well as professionally curated and produced exhibitions, performances, readings, and screenings. Ksw makes artists out of community members and community members out of artists. Since 1972, ksw has nurtured the creative spirit, offered an important platform for new voices to be heard, and connected artists with community.”

“Asian american virtual histories: asian american virtual histories is an intergenerational oral history project exploring the cultural impact of asian american arts activism in san francisco. Included the dreaming people's history exhibition at sfpl education: ksw's legacy is one built on teaching, sharing resources, and creating community in times of need. To continue this legacy, we are offering classes that teach skills, consider unique perspectives central to marginalized experiences, and are accessible. Through our education program, artists can participate in online classes to learn new skills and make new connections. Ksw presents: this bimonthly series showcases visual and performing artists at kearny street workshop's location at arc gallery in the south of market (soma) neighborhood of san francisco. Ksw presents is an opportunity for underserved communities to access art and creativity, and exploring intersections of race,gender, sexuality, ability, socioeconomic status, immigration status, and more. Each event features quality and culturally relevant art from a variety of disciplines (visual, performing, literary, etc.) created by emerging and established asian pacific american (apa) artists.”
