IRS990ScheduleN/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0Name of the Person: David Slansky and Susan Tompkins, Explanation: The organization suffered a 1.4 million dollars embezzlement at the hands of its bookkeeper between 2012 and March 2018. The organization struggled to continue its programs over those years and up through December 2019 at which point no new cases were started as it became impossible to sustain new work. Susan Tompkins and David Slansky, the organization's Executive Director and Deputy Director, respectively, poured in $28,012 of their personal funds to help the organization pay for its operating expenses between February and December 2018. In addition, they drove 2,253 miles on organization business without compensation. Furthermore, they were owed $20,000 by the organization for office rent for the months of May 2018 through December 2019. The above describes what had been non-reimbursed expense David Slansky and Susan Tompkins had incurred. This was not compensation but rather reimbursement owed and paod. By way of context, David Slansky and Susan Tompkins reduced salary compensation as described below, as the organization struggled under the then undetected embezzlement. Susan's salary was $91,000 in 2012, dropped to $15,200 the next year, averaged $14,345 between 2013 and 2019, and ended at $1,500 for 2020 and $6,000 for 2021, all the while she worked full time. David Slansky's salary dropped from $72,300 in 2013 to $29,280 in 2014 and then to an average $14,140 between 2014 and 2020 with 2020 being $1,500, all the while he worked full time. At the time of closure and dissolution, in order to partially reimburse Susan Tompkins and David Slansky for the expenses described here, the organization provided them with the $24,477 it had left in savings.
