“Downtown Berkeley Association is the Owners's Association for the new Property-based Business Improvement District (PBID), representing 187 property owners and approximately 750 of their merchant business tenants. In June of 2016, Downtown Berkeley property owners renewed for another 10 years the PBID self-imposed and self-governed property tax assessment to fund new environmental and economic enhancements that augment - not replace - base level City Services. The purpose of the PBID is to create and sustain a vibrant and prosperous City Center by :1) Producing a consistently clean, welcoming, and attractive Downtown experience; 2) Attracting and retaining new businesses; 3) Cultivating a fun and vibrant Downtown "living room 4) Enhancing property values, sales, and occupancies; 5) Helping Downtown businesses compete locally and regionally. Clean and Safe Services, Downtown Publicity, Events, BART Plaza and the New Market/Economic Development Program are all helping to make Downtown Berkeley a more welcoming place, serving 750 local businesses on a daily basis, they have helped business owners resolve problems, assisted visitors with directions, connected needy people to social services, and called police and mental health services when needed.The District encompasses 43 blocks, bounded by Delaware Street to the north, Oxford and Fulton Streets to the east, Martin Luther King Jr. Way to the west, and Dwight Way to the South.”
