Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

A draft of the 990 is provided to all board members, who are given the opportunity to review the document. The final approval of the 990 prior to filing is completed by the finance committee, executive director and finance manager.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Each member of the board or any committee has the responsibility to identify the existence of a conflict of interest with respect to any matter before the board or committee for consideration. After a conflict has been identified, the member discloses the conflict to the other members of the board or committee and then the matter is discussed, but not voted on. If a member is in doubt as to whether a conflict of interest exists, the member will assume that a conflict exists.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

All hourly wages and annual salaries for staff are reviewed each year and determined at the discretion of the executive director. Considerations to this process include: (a) industry research; (b) economic trends; (c) tenure with the organization; (d) job performance and classifications; (e) employee duties and qualifications. The board of directors determines the salary of the executive director based on multiple criteria, including the factors listed above. The compensation survey was last conducted in 2021.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization's governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements are made available to the public as requests are made.

Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART I, LINE 1, DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION MISSION:

Greentrike is a nonprofit that advocates for and models equitable access to playful experiences for children, youth, and families. Since 1985, greentrike has honored the creativity and strength of children and youth, making play a foundation for connection, learning, and joy. Our vision is a just and joyful community where every child feels seen and supported. Greentrike supports children and their caregivers through two children's museums, one in downtown tacoma and one on joint base lewis-mcchord, along with programs across pierce county, including: play to learn, a kindergarten-readiness program; expanded learning opportunities, an after-school enrichment program; preschool powered by play, a drop-off preschool program; family steam nights; and the monarch diaper bank, which provides free diapering supplies. Admission to the museums follows a pay as you will model, meaning entry is by donation. Greentrike was the first children's museum in the nation to adopt this approach, and we remain the longest-running to offer it.

Form 990, Part IX, Line 11G

Contracted service delivery: program service expenses 635,330. Management and general expenses 60,231. Fundraising expenses 18,419. Total expenses 713,980.

FORM 990, PART XI, LINE 8:

In 2024, the organization discovered that $232,000 of a grant with unmet conditions was presented as support and revenue without donor restrictions rather than deferred revenue within the statement of financial position as of december 31, 2023. The organization corrected the resulting overstatement of revenue and net assets without donor restriction and understatement of deferred revenue as of december 31, 2023, resulting in a prior period adjustment on the tax return for this amount.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The rebecca smith ozias endowment fund is hereby established at the children's museum of tacoma with a gift of 530 shares of household international stock by mrs. Ruth smith. Rebecca smith ozias endowment fund will benefit the area or areas of greatest need at the museum as determined by its board of directors. The children's museum of tacoma, a 501(c)3 organization, is the owner and manager of the rebecca smith ozias endowment fund. In this role, the children's museum board of directors is free to invest, reinvest and/or liquidate the 530 shares of household international stock and place the proceeds into an investment vehicle of its choosing. The original principal of the rebecca smith ozias endowment fund, and subsequent additions thereto, will be held inviolate by the museum.

PART X, LINE 2:

The internal revenue service has recognized the organization as exempt from federal income taxes under provisions of section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code (irc) except to the extent of unrelated business taxable income as defined under irc sections 511 through 515. Any unrelated business income generated is not significant; therefore, no provision for income taxes has been recorded. The organization follows fasb asc 740-10, income taxes, relating to accounting for uncertain tax positions. Asc 740-10 prescribes a recognition threshold and measurement process for accounting for uncertain tax positions and also provides guidance on various related matters such as derecognition, interest, penalties and disclosures required. Management does not believe the organization has an uncertain tax position as of and for the years ended december 31, 2024 and 2023.

PART III, LINE 4:

The exhibition consists of metal horse and cow sculptures that are displayed in an outside play area. The sculptures help inspire the imagination of children during their outdoor playtime.
