Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 6: Explanation of Classes of Members or Shareholder

Any person as defined by section 5065 of the california corporations code is eligible to be a member. Any person is qualified for membership who is willing to endorse and support the purposes of the corporation. Individual, family, and corporate members are entitled to one vote on each matter submitted to a vote of the members. Family membership confers the right to vote upon two adult persons residing in one household. Special membership carries only those rights specifically accorded by the resolution or bylaw that conveyed the special membership status. Honorary membership conveys the right of voice but not vote.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

The return was prepared by an outside cpa using information that was provided by the operations manager and reviewed by the treasurer. An electronic copy was distributed to all current board members and the executive director. Following a review and comment period, the return was signed by the president and submitted.

Financial Statement Notes

Part IV, Line 2B: Explanation of escrow account liability

The organization holds a custodial account for the fulbright program. These funds were earned by the program before it came under the oversight of the institute of international education (iie) and international house davis. They are used to fund any incidental expenses in excess of the iee allocation.

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

There are two endowed funds held by university of california. The jeanne wielage smith endowment: under the terms of the endowment, 40% of annual earnings are added to principal and 60% are used for supplies, training and program support of the international house family friendship program, english language classes and cultural exhibits and displays. The international house davis endowment: under the terms of the endowment, earnings are used to support international house davis programs.

THIS PROGRAM INVITES LOCAL CULTURAL ORGANIZATIONS, SCHOOLS, AND RESIDENTS TO CREATE DISPLAYS AND AN INTERACTIVE BOOTH TO SHARE A PARTICULAR CULTURE OR REGION WITH THE BROADER COMMUNITY. THESE CULTURE BOOTHS TEACH ATTENDEES ABOUT CUISINE, LANGUAGE, TRADITIONAL DRESS, CRAFTS, POPULAR CULTURE, HISTORY, AND MORE. EACH YEAR ABOUT 20-30 CULTURES ARE REPRESENTED. WE ALSO INVITE ARTS AND CRAFT VENDORS AND FOOD VENDORS WITH A PREFERENCE FOR THOSE WHICH REPRESENT DIFFERENT CULTURAL TRADITIONS AND BACKGROUNDS. TWO STAGES FEATURE LOCAL MUSICIANS AND DANCERS REPRESENTING MANY DIFFERENT STYLES OF MUSIC, DANCE, AND PERFORMANCE FROM AROUND THE GLOBE. EACH YEAR, THIS PROGRAM ATTRACTS BETWEEN 3,000 AND 5,000 ATTENDEES FROM THROUGHOUT OUR REGION AND FURTHERS OUR MISSION OF GLOBAL CROSS-CULTURAL EXCHANGE, RESPECT, AND APPRECIAITON.INTERNATIONAL HOUSE PROVIDES OFFICE SPACE AND PARKING FOR THE HUBERT H. THESE CLASSES WERE OFFERED ON A DROP IN BASIS WITH AN ESTIMATED 210 STUDENTS EACH WEEK. A NEW PROGRAM OF LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION CLASSES BEGAN IN JANUARY 2017. THESE CLASSES OFFER 10 WEEK SESSIONS WHICH ALLOW STUDENTS TO PROGRESS AS A COHORT. PARTICIPANTS IN CLASSES INCLUDED STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS FROM UC DAVIS, THEIR FAMILIES, AS WELL AS LOCAL RESIDENTS INTENDING TO IMPROVE THEIR SPEAKING OR WRITING SKILLS. IN ADDITION, I-HOUSE OFFERED MOVEMENT CLASSES FEATURING DIFFERENT EXERCISE AND ARTS TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD SUCH A YOGA, CAPOEIRA, TANGO, AND SALSA. ALONG WITH THESE REGULARLY HELD CLASSES, I-HOUSE HELD MANY WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS SUCH AS INTERNATIONAL COOKING CLASSES, INTERNATIONAL WINE TASTING,CULTURE NIGHTS SHOWCASING DIFFERENT COUNTRIES, AND ARTS & CRAFTS DEMONSTRATIONS. SEVERAL DINNERS WERE HELD INCLUDING A TRADITIONAL AMERICAN THANKGIVING DINNER AND A NOWRUZ PERSIAN NEW YEAR CELEBRATION. CHILDREN'S INTERNATIONAL STORYTELLING BROUGHT STORYTELLERS IN MANY TRADITIONS TO SHARE THEIR STORIES WITH CHILDREN. THE CONNECTIONS PROGRAM IS A WEEKLY PROGRAM DRAWING AN AVERAGE OF 30 PARTICIPANTS PER WEEK WHICH HAS BEEN WELCOMING INTERNATIONAL VISITORS AND SCHOLARS TO DAVIS, AS WELL AS THEIR FAMILIES, FOR SEVERAL DECADES.
