Mission and Program Overview

Mission

PRO Youth & Families is a Sacramento-based non-profit organization. In the summer of 1980, problems of youth drug and alcohol use in Fair Oaks Park catalyzed a group of community leaders to come together to study solutions to the problem. Nine task forces were formed; one evolving into the grass-roots, non-profit organization, PRO Youth & Families. Today, PRO Youth & Families confronts the trauma youth, families and communities face, by inspiring, educating and mobilizing young people. Many youth today hunger for a place to belong, to be recognized, to realize their own strengths and abilities and to voice their ideas in order to make a difference. The Organization is firmly committed to providing the vehicle that taps that hunger and engages youth as leaders and change agents through Civic Engagement, Advocacy, Mentoring and Summer Learning programs.

Inspiring, educating and mobilizing young people to build healthy futures for themselves, their families and their communities is the mission of the Sacramento based, non-profit organization, People Reaching Out.

IRS990/Desc0Youth Advocacy and Civic EngagementStudents Reaching Out (SRO) is a youth-led, project-based program designed to empower youth in disenfranchised communities with the skills, networks, and motivation to leverage their voice and become strong advocates for change. The action-oriented program framework is based on best-practice principles of youth advocacy and social justice. Youth become empowered as they apply the principles, create their own advocacy projects and implement real-world solutions. Through SRO, middle school and high school students have the opportunity to research, develop and advocate around issues that adversely affect them, their school, their neighborhood, and, ultimately, their future. SRO participants have the option of engaging in a six-week format or a full school-year long program; however, in both cases, all students complete at least one project. SRO youth advocacy projects, like other environmental prevention initiatives, aim to make change at a community level by influencing community conditions, standards, norms, institutions, structures, systems and policies (CADCA, Research Support For Comprehensive Community Interventions, 2010). Projects have included: implementing community assessments measuring the physical vitality, health and friendliness of neighborhoods towards youth; pedestrian safety and transportation; and the development and implementation of social cause marketing campaigns relating to obesity and interpersonal dating violence.Youth @ City Council (Y@CC) is a twelve-month civic education program designed to develop young leaders and foster their civic engagement through hands-on, practical experiences utilizing the Capitol City as a textbook landscape. In Y@CC, young people learn about the core values of democracy along with the inner-workings of local, county and state governments. A wide range of meaningful, first-hand opportunities are offered to youth including: participating in City Council meetings, developing professional relationships with local leaders, and interacting with staff who work in the State Capitol Building. In addition, youth demonstrate higher order thinking skills in their knowledge development classes as they critically analyze, debate and discuss current legislative issues. As a result, youth develop a culminating project which requires each participant to identify, research and compose a legislative proposal and then present it during their program graduation ceremony.

IRS990/MissionDesc0People Reaching Out is a Sacramento-based non-profit organization that inspires, educates and mobilizes young people to build healthy futures for themselves, their families and their communities. In the summer of 1980, problems of youth drug and alcohol use in Fair Oaks Park catalyzed a group of community leaders to come together to study solutions to the problem. Nine task forces were formed; one evolving into the grass-roots, non-profit organization, People Reaching Out. Today, People Reaching Outs mission is to inspire, educate, and mobilize young people (ages 9-18) to build a healthier future for themselves, their families and their communities. Many youth today hunger for a place to belong, to be recognized, to realize their own strengths and abilities and to voice their ideas in order to make a difference. People Reaching Out is firmly committed to providing the vehicle that taps that hunger and engages youth as leaders and change agents through Civic Engagement, Advocacy, Mentor

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Mentoring and Volunteerism PRO Mentoring (PROM) is a cross-age youth mentoring program where a high school youth (mentor) is matched with a younger, elementary or middle school, student (mentee). The purpose of the program is to build positive mentor-mentee relationships in order to champion and support the mentees social and emotional development. The science of mentoring has proven there are multiple benefits to the practice which include, but are not limited to, better academic performance, better school attendance, and positive attitudes towards parents, peers, teachers, and community. The evidence-based cross-age mentoring framework is grounded on a foundation of positive youth development where youths strengths are recognized and their skills, abilities, and motivation are leveraged for positive outcomes. PROM is a program that intentionally incorporates social emotional learning skill development along with positive youth development practices to ensure an environment that fosters effective mentoring and role modeling. As a result, a close, consistent and enduring mentoring relationship is developed that has long lasting life benefits for both participants. PROMs enhancement curriculum entitled My Smyle engaged girls (ages 10-14) in youth-led empowerment workshops that promoted positive self-image and responsible decision-making while fostering a culture of all-around health and wellness. The curriculum is delivered by older, female teenage mentors who are from the same community as the younger mentees. Over the course of two, two-hour workshops, the mentors educate participants about the implications of alcohol and drug use and relay messages regarding the importance of educational attainment, positive body image, healthy eating and active living.
