Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of the Smith River Alliance is to provide for the long-term protection, restoration and stewardship of natural resources in the Smith River watershed.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Salmonid Restoration: Coho salmon are listed as endangered through the California Endangered Species Act and threatened through the Federal Endangered Species Act. Data on the distribution and abundance of Smith River Coho salmon will help fisheries biologists better understand factors limiting the successful spawning, rearing and survival of this species. And by better understanding the limiting factors for Coh salmon survival, fisheries scientists gain critically important insights a limiting factors for the spawning, rearing, and survival of ALL salmon species in the Smith River. SRA in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Game is implementing a strategic, long-term population assessment and monitoring program for Coho salmon in the Smith River coastal plain. Specific tasks include 1) Establish reach-base sampling frames to support monitoring Coho spawning escapement and juvenile rearing distribution and occurrence; 2) Monitor adult Coho population abundance; 3) Monitor spatial distribution, occurrence, and relative abundance of rearing juvenile Coho salmon; and 4) Identify life history patterns, including: habitat use, seasonal distribution, site fide and relative abundance of Coho salmon rearing in the estuary. Level II Stream Surveys: SRA is identifying and describing the existing stream channel, riparian and aquatic ecosystem conditions of thirteen streams within the Smith River National Recreation Area. The objective of this project is to answer key questions for each stream re the abundance, density, distribution, and diversity of wild fish. Smith River NRA- Hurdygurdy Video: SRA is developing an interpretive tool to support better understanding of the significant resources protected in the Smith River National Recreation Area (SRNRA). The finished product will be about 12 minutes in length and will tell the story of the SRNRA through one of the significant tributaries in the watershed-Hurdygurdy Creek. The narrated video would include information about the headwaters, the forest, wild and scenic corridor, salmon and the history of the designation as a National Recreation Area.
Activity 3
The Smith River National Recreation Area (SRNRA) includes over 460 square miles of the mid and upper watershed. Our goals include the following: 1) Improve the ability of the Smith River National Recreation Area (SRNRA) to deliver on their conservation and recreation mission; and 2) Develop local, regional and statewide support for public lands in Del Norte. Our work includes changing the tone of the discourse in Del Norte County by mentoring and interventions; practicing cooperative and in it together behaviors wherever possible; and supporting the use of an interest-based approach to resolving disputes. Our work has also included serving as the facilitator and coordinator for the Interagency Visitor Center project, which involves 14 agencies, entities, and Tribes working cooperatively to develop a shared visitor-serving facility at the Crescent City Harbor. This is an important project because travel/tourism is the single largest component of the local economy. The project team completed a conceptual design, draft floor plan, theme to guide interpretative planning and displays. SRA also implemented a program plan at Rock Creek Ranch to host and promote seasonal experience trips and outings for adults, youth and families thereby growing an essential stakeholder group for the SRNRA. The Ranch served as the home base for these experience trips and outings which will celebrate and explore th surrounding SRNRA.

IRS990/Description0The Mill Creek Program presents extraordinary challenges for maintaining and restoring wildlife and fish populations. The legacy of decades of intensive industrial timber management threatens the ecological integrity of the natural systems that support Mill Creek's wildlife and fisheries. SRA is working to improve the structural and biological diversity of the forest and eliminate logging roads which threaten to choke the creeks with sediment, destroying salmon and trout spawning and rearing habitat.

IRS990ScheduleO/GeneralExplanation/Explanation0The Smith River Alliance (www.smithriveralliance.org) is a Watershed organization with offices on the south Fork of the Smith River and Crescent City, Ca. Founded in 1980,the mission is to provide for the protection, restoration and stewardship of natural resources in the Smith River watershed. > The Smith River is located on California's north coast, in beautiful Del Norte county. The Smith is California's only major undammed river. The watershed includes and is afforded special protection and management as a result of extensive federal wild and scenic river designations (over 300 miles), a 460+ square mile Smith River National Recreation Area (designated by congress in 1990), and redwood national and state parks. > Natural stream flows and protected habitat combine to make the Smith River the premier stronghold for salmon and steelhead in California. > The Alliance uses the goals of advocacy, education and land acquisition to restore and protect the land, water and human resources in the watershed. Specific programs and projects include: 1. Salmonid/aquatic habitat restoration and annual adult fish counts. 2. Watershed protection and restoration (Hurdygurdy And Mill Creek projects). 3. Lake Earl wildlife area and Tolowa Dunes projects. 4. Rock Creek Ranch environmental programs. Conflict of Interest Policy. > SRA has a Conflicts of Interest Policy which is annually reviewed, discussed and signed by each Board member.
