Generally accepted accounting principles provide accounting disclosure guidance about positions taken by an organization in its tax returns that might be uncertain. Management has considered its tax positions and believes that all of the positions taken by NHLP in their federal and state exempt organization tax returns are more likely than not to be sustained upon examination. NHLP's returns are subject to examination by federal and state taxing authorities, generally for three and four years, respectively, after they are filed.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | NHLP has served as host of the national Housing Justice Network (HJN) since its establishment in 1977. An informal network formed to unite housing advocates and clients across the country, the HJN is comprised of more than 1,000 advocates, attorneys, allied organizations, and residents. NHLP hosts an active listserv where members consult each other on legal and technical issues, exchange information on policy developments and ongoing litigation; coordinates policy advocacy; and leads several working groups on critical housing issues. The HJN 3-day National Meeting in December 2015 attracted roughly 200 attendees who participated in plenary sessions and 35 training workshops. NHLP continued to work on housing issues of national importance, providing research and analysis of regulations affecting fair housing, domestic violence, language access, consolidation of public housing authorities, rural housing policies, and housing preservation initiatives, as well as amicus briefs in key fair housing cases. We undertook research and writing for the publication of the 2016 Supplement to our 2012 4th Edition of the HUD Tenants' Rights manual. |

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | Advancing housing protection for domestic and sexual violence survivors:For over seven years, NHLP has served as a technical assistance provider to the Department of Justice's Office of Violence Against Women, providing a national program of targeted technical assistance, training, and resource development on federal and state housing rights of survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. NHLP's project addresses an overarching need common among those assisting survivors, for knowledge about the rights and strategies that promote housing stability and defend against homelessness. NHLP's support to the DV field is critical given the link between domestic violence and housing insecurity: one out of every four homeless women is homeless because of domestic violence committed against her. Each year NHLP assists an average of 4,000 DV field service staff and legal services attorneys with training, resources and individualized technical assistance. |

Each year on average, NHLP provides training to roughly 500 of California's legal services attorneys, responds to over 250 requests for individualized technical assistance, engages in litigation support, and leads legislative advocacy to improve the state's housing policies. NHLP also hosts working groups on critical housing issues and with all of these activities, amasses thousands of hours in support of California legal services programs under these programs. In March 2013, the State of California Department of Justice, Office of the Attorney General awarded $1 million to the National Housing Law Project to lead an 18-month project focused on statewide implementation and enforcement of the new California Homeowner Bill of Rights (HBOR). California's HBOR became law on January 1, 2013 and is intended to ensure fair lending and borrowing practices for California homeowners. An additional law (AB2610) also provides protections against the abrupt displacement and/or eviction of tenants living in foreclosed homes. Under its HBOR initiative, NHLP has assisted over 70,000 visitors on its resource-laden website, trained over 1,500 California-based consumer attorneys, and responded to over 1,000 requests for individualized technical assistance from attorneys who represent homeowners and tenants affected by foreclosure. |
