Mission and Program Overview

Mission

First published in 1976 by the nonprofit Foundation for National Progress, Mother Jones' mission is to produce revelatory journalism that in its power and reach informs and inspires a more just and democratic world. This nonprofit news organization specializes in investigative, political, social justice, and environmental reporting, directly reaching an average of nearly 6 million people each month. Mother Jones also reaches millions more through pickup of our stories by other media and advocacy organizations and sharing through social media.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Ben bagdikian fellowship program:since 1980, mother jones has placed such emphasis on creating opportunities for aspiring journalists through the ben bagdikian fellowship program. The program is named in recognition of bagdikian's many contributions to journalism--as an investigative report for the washington post who helped break the pentagon papers story; as a media critic who put the problem of media consolidation on the public agenda; and as an educator who helped guide the journalism program at the university of california, berkeley, into the digital era. Ben's professional record, his personal integrity, and his commitment to social justice inspired us to name mother jones' internship program in his honor.while there are a number of general journalism and reporting internships available for students or recent college graduates, only mother jones puts such an emphasis on investigative reporting. Among the largest training rpograms in the independent media community, the ben bagdikian fellowship program gives aspiring journalists intensive training in what it takes to publish outstanding, independent journalism, to meet deadlines, and to work as part of a professional team.the ben bagdikian fellowship program is arare opportunity for new journalists to work alongside some of the top reporters and journalists in the business, and to learn the inner workings of multimedia national reporting with a special focus on investigative journalism. Depending on funding availability, the program also offers internships for those interested in art and photography, nonprofit public affairs and social media, and the business and technology side of publishing. Graduates leave with practical knowledge, work that they can be proud of, and a network of friends and colleagues that will last a lifetime.mother jones' training program is an essential if also unrecognized element of american journalism's intrastructure. Of the nearly 800 interns and fellows who have passed through mother jones' internship program since 1980, more than half moved on to a career in journalism or the media at some of the nation's most prestigious media outlets. Graduates of the program work throughout the national media world at outlets ranging from the new york times and the wall street journal to national public radio and salon.com.
Activity 3
The climate desk:mother jones organized and manages a first-of-its-kind partnership designed to cover climate change from multiple perspectives with a lively, broadly popular format. Reaching a potential audience of nearly 30 million people, climate desk partners include mother jones, the atlantic, wired, slate.com, grist.org, the center for investigative reporting, pbs' "need to know," and--as of february 2012--the uk guardian.during calendar 2012, the climate desk anchor team produced 80 stories that were directly viewed by minimum of 1.1 million people via the climate desk youtube channel or at the websites of the eight partners. Actual reach is significantly higher, since this counts only direct "hits" to the climate desk's youtube site or partner sites and only if the partners remember to embed a tracking code when they post a climate desk story (one of the projects for 2013 is to develop a more accurate method of tracking total audience reach).partners tell us that the climate desk provides them with an invaluable way to augment their climate coverage: by sharing their own original work with a bigger audience, and by having access to a suite of top-flight reporters and editorial staff across the partnership to cover a beat they recognize as important but have not been able to devote consisent resources to. They can choose from an a la carte menu of content each week to best suit their needs. High-turnover websites like the atlantic favor climate desk's blog posts, slide shows and daily reporting, while weekly programs like need to know prefer our longer-format, more richly-produced features. If a partner produced the content themselves, it might prove cost prohibitive. In addition, the partners have also been very excited to participate in climate desk's path breaking work with new technologies and formats for storytelling, social media, and data visualization.in the fall of 2012, the climate desk also added climate desk live, a biweekly breakfast briefing hosted by science journalist chris mooney that is designed to elevate the beltway discussion about climate issues. Targeting policy makers, legislative staff, advocates, and media representatives, cdl's briefings have brought together standing-room-only audiences and begun to generate attention in the beltway media, too.looking ahead, thanks to expanded donor support, in 2013 the climate desk will add a full-time project director and the core of a second production team.

GRADUATES OF THE PROGRAM WORK THROUGHOUT THE NATIONAL MEDIA WORLD AT OUTLETS RANGING FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES AND THE WALL STREET JOURNAL TO NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO AND SALON.COM.

IRS990/Description0COVERING THE BELTWAY AND THE 2012 ELECTION:MOTHER JONES IS JOURNALISM, AS IT ALWAYS HAS BEEN. TODAY, THOUGH, WE TELL THE STORY ON MULTIPLE PLATFORMS USING THE BEST DIGITAL TOOLS AVAILABLE, INNOVATING AND INVESTIGATING NEW WAYS OF STORYTELLING WITH EVERY TURN OF THE PAGE, CLICK OF THE MOUSE, OR SWIPE OF THE SCREEN.IN ADDITION, SINCE WE LAUNCHED OUR EXPANDED 11-PERSON WASHINGTON DC BUREAU ION 2007 UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF BUREAU CHIEF DAVID CORN, IT HAS CARVED OTU AN IMPORTANT AND EFFECTIVE NICHE IN THE BELTWAY JOURNALISM SCENE. IT STANDS WITH ONE FOOT DEEP INSIDE "THE VILLAGE" (AS DC HAS COME TO BE CALLED BY PROGRESSIVE BLOGGERS) BUT ALSO WITH ONE FOOT FIRMLY ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKING IN. IT'S THAT "INSIDE/OUTSIDE" STANCE THAT HELPS KEEP MOJO'S DC COVERAGE FRESH, FREE FROM THE HERD MENTALITY AND ADDICTION TO ACCESS THAT GOVERNS SO MUCH OF WHAT PASSES FOR COVERAGE OF THE NATIONAL POLITICAL SCENE THESE DAYS.IN 2012, WE CONTINUED TO DELIVER DAILY COVERAGE OF THE TWISTS AND TURNS IN AMERICAN POLITICS, THE VOLATILE INTERSECTION BETWEEN GRASSROOTS PROTESTS AND ELITE POLITICAL GAMESMANSHIP, AND THE PERNICIOUS INFLUENCE OF DARK MONEY ON THE PUBLIC DEBATE. MOTHER JONES' ENVIRONMENTAL, FOOD, AND AGRICULTURE REPORTERS COMPOSE ONE OF THE LARGEST AND BEST TEAMS ON THIS AREA OF ANY PUBLICATION IN THE UNITED STATES. GLOBAL AND DOMESTIC HUMAN RIGHTS STRUGGLES WERE AT CENTER STAGE FOR US, AS WELL IN 2012, WHETHER IT WAS JAMES RIDGEWAY COVERING THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND THE CAMPAIGN TO LIMIT SOLITARY CONFINEMENT IN AMERICA'S PRISONS, KATE SHEPPARD ON THE FIGHT TO PROTECT REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS FOR WOMEN, ADAM SERWER WRITING ABOUT THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION'S FAILURE TO ADVANCE CIVIL LIBERTIES, OR STEPHANIE MENCIMER WRITING ABOUT THE STATE OF THE AMERICAN JUDICIARY.FINALLY, IN 2012 MOTHER JONES WASHINGTON DC BUREAU CHIEF DAVID CORN'S EXPOSE' OF THE MITT ROMNEY "47 PERCENT" VIDEO SHOWED HOW MOTHER JONES' REPORTING CAN DRAMATICALLY AFFECT THE WORLD.IN THE 36 HOURS AFTER PUBLICATION, MORE THAN 2.5 MILLION PEOPLE VISITED MOTHERJONES.COM, AND BY THE END OF THE WEEK THE SITE LOGGED MORE THAN 8 MILLION PAGE VIEWS; BOTH ARE LARGER THAN THE SITE TYPICALLY RECEIVES IN AN ENTIRE MONTH. THE YOUTUBE VIDEO OF ROMNEY'S TALK TO CONSERVATIVE DONORS WAS WATCHED BY ANOTHER 7 MILLION VIEWERE DURING THE FIRST FEW DAYS AFTER WE PUBLISHED THE STORY.DAVID CORN, ALONG WITH CO-EDITORS CLARA JEFFERY AND MONIKA BAUERLEIN APPEARED ON DOZENS OF RADIO AND TELEVISION SHOWS SUCH AS NIGHTLINE, INSIDE EDITION, GERALDO, WSJ LIVE, AND FACE THE NATION. THE IMPACT OF THE VIDEO EXTENDED TO EMAIL CAMPAIGNS AND ADVOCACY PUSHES AROUND THE 47%, INCLUDING FROM THE DNC, OBAMA FOR AMERICA, SEN. FRANK LAUTENBERG, EVEN JAMES O'KEEFE.NOT ONLY DID THE 47% MAKE HEADLINES, SO DID MOTHER JONES ITSELF. THE NEW YORK TIMES REPORTED THAT MOTHER JONES "THIS WEEK HAS BEEN DRIVING THE POLITICAL DEBATE;" COLUMNIST DAVID CARR WROTE THAT MOTHER JONES' "TAKE ON THE WORLD IS BUILT ON HOLDING WHAT IT SEES AS THE 1 PERCENT TO ACCOUNT, BUT THE JOURNALISM THEY PROSECUTE IS TAKEN SERIOUSLY" NOTING THAT "THROUGH ALL THE POLITICAL PRESSURES AND THE CHALLENGES FACING THE MAGAZINE INDUSTRY, MOTHER JONES THRIVED."THE STORY LANDED IN THE PAGES OF GLOBAL MEDIA, TOO. THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD WRITE THAT MOTHER JONES "HAS BEEN PUNCHING ABOVE ITS WEIGHT IN POLITICAL REPORTING FOR YEARS," WHILE THE GERMAN DIALY, SUEDDEUSCHE ZEITUNG SUMMED IT UP BY WRITING THAT "THOUGH US MEDIA SUCH AS THE NEW YORK TIMES, POLITICO, AND ABC NEWS NOTED THAT THEY WERE NOT IN A POSITION TO VERIFY THE VIDEO'S AUTHENTICITY, NO ONE EXPRESSED SERIOUS DOUBTS--MOTHER JONES'S RECORD OF GETTING SCOOPS IS TOO STRONG FOR THAT."

IRS990/MissionDescription0SINCE 1975, MOTHER JONES HAS BEEN THE FLAGSHIP PROJECT OF THE NONPROFIT FOUNDATION FOR NATIONAL PROGRESS. ITS MISSION: TO PRODUCE REVELATORY JOURNALISM THAT IN ITS POWER AND REACH SEEKS TO INFORM AND INSPIRE A MORE JUST AND DEMOCRATIC WORLD, WITH A PARTICULAR EMPHASIS, AS CO-FOUNDER ADAM HOCHSCHILD PUT IT SOME YEARS AGO, ON INVESTIGATIONS OF THE GREAT UNELECTED POWER WIELDERS OF OUR TIME--CORPORATIONS THAT SPAN THE GLOBE, ATTEMPT TO SHAPE OUR DEMOCRACY TO THEIR ENDS, AND DOMINATE THE PUBLIC DISCOURSE.2012 WAS A LANDMARK YEAR FOR NONPROFIT MAGAZINE MOTHER JONES. IN ITS 37TH YEAR OF PUBLICATION, THE MAGAZINE BROKE "ONE OF THE IMPORTANT CAMPAIGN STORES OF THE YEAR" WITH DC BUREAU CHIEF DAVID CORN'S REPORTING OF THE ROMNEY "47" PERCENT FUNDRAISER STORY. AFTER PUBLICATION, THE VIDEO QUICKLY WENT VIRAL, GENERATED MEDIA COVERAGE WORLDWIDE, TOOK SOCIAL MEDIA BY STORM, AND SENT SHOCKWAVES THROUGHOUT THE CAMPAIGN. (SEE SCHEDULE O FOR CONTINUATION.)
