“The opma is a not-for-profit medical association committed to advocating foot health and related care for the people of the state of oregon.”
“The object of the opma is to bring into one organization the podiatric physicians of the state of oregon, so that by meeting and by full and frank interchange of views, opma may achieve a greater quality of medical practice, raise the standards of education of those who would or are practicing podiatric medicine, secure the enactment of proper laws governing the practice of podiatric medicine, and unite with similar organizations in other states and territories of the united states of america to form the american podiatric medical association. Seminars opma holds a minimum of two seminars each year for member and non-member podiatrists. These usually consist of one to three days of educational podiatry-related lectures and workshops. Prominent doctors from throughout the country speak on various topics relating to podiatry. Attendees receive cme credit for attending. Seminars further our exempt purpose by providing education to our members and other podiatrists with the intent that that makes them better practitioners. Meetings meetings are held twice a year and members receive updates on the progress of various opma committees, legislation, and governmental affairs. Meetings further our exempt purpose by providing education to our members, updating them on what is happening with the organization and the profession, and give them a chance to meet socially and professionally. Resources for the public opma maintains a website (www.opmatoday.com) which provides the public with information on common foot problems, diabetes and other issues. It also serves as a referral source for patients to podiatrists throughout the state. In addition, the website acts as an information source for members to receive information on upcoming events and publications which can assist them in their practice. Legislation opma lobbies for legislation favorable to physicians and patients. In may 2013 oregon house bill 2622 was successfully passed. This bill amends the definition of "physician" under oregon law to include doctors of podiatric medicine. Our organization is supportive of the helpp act (hr1761 and s1318) which would recognize podiatrists as physicians under medicaid, clarify and improve coordination of care in medicare's therapeutic shoe program for patients with diabetes and strengthen medicaid program integrity. In 1999, opma passed legislation to clarify the scope of practice for podiatrists to include the ankle and allow qualified podiatrists to perform ankle surgery. The organization also successfully lobbied for a bill to reinstate podiatrists as attending physicians within oregon's workers' compensation system and passed legislation to allow podiatrists to assist in any surgery on the body.”
