Mission

Forge project is a native-led non-profit organization whose mandate is to cultivate and advance indigenous leadership in arts and culture. The corporation is organized and operated exclusively for purposes within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and empowers native culture workers and promotes broader understanding and appreciation of indigenous contemporary culture and knowledge. Located on the homelands of the moh-he-con-nuck in new york state, the corporation's main activities include annual residency programs and grants for indigenous culture workers, an expanding contemporary indigenous art collection available for research and lending, regular publications on indigenous art and culture, public cultural programming, and gatherings centered around contemporary indigenous expression.

Forge project is a native-led non-profit organization whose mandate is to cultivate and advance indigenous leadership in arts and culture. Located on the ancestral homelands of the moh-he-con-nuck people, forge is situated on a 60-acre campus in the mahicannituck (hudson river) valley. A change-making model for native cultural self-determination and leadership, forge fuses traditional and contemporary knowledge and practices to build community, public education, and collective action. This work includes a fellowship program, working art collection and exhibitions, editorial programs including an online journal, ongoing land remediation work, and an array of public programs for both in-person local and virtual worldwide audiences.

No review was conducted by the board of directors. A review was/will be conducted by the board designated executive director (officer position) before filing and a final copy of the 990 form will be shared with the board of directors upon filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The organization has a conflict of interest policy which covers all directors, officers, and key persons of the organization. A covered person has a duty to disclose in good faith to the directors the material facts of any proposed transaction of the organization in which such covered person or a related party has any actual or potential conflict of interest. The disclosure should be made prior to any consideration of such proposed transaction by the board. The member with a potential conflict is required to disclose such conflict, is given the opportunity to present and share facts about such interest and is then required to leave any meeting in which the rest of the board may discuss and then vote on determining the conflict of interest. Additional restrictions imposed on persons with a conflict, include prohibiting them from participating in the governing body's deliberations and decisions relevant to the area(s) of conflicted interest. The member with a potential conflict is required to disclose such conflict, is given the opportunity to present and share facts about such interest and is then required to leave any meeting in which the rest of the board may discuss and then vote on determining the conflict of interest. Any proposed transaction in which a covered person or related party has a conflict of interest must be approved by a majority of the board, not including any interested individual(s). In approving any such transaction, the durector must make a determination that the transaction is fair, reasonable, and in the organization's best interest. If a covered person or related party has a substantial financial interest in such transaction, the directors must consider alternative transactions to the extent available. Covered persons must, upon or prior to their initial election or hiring, and annually thereafter, complete, sign, and submit a disclosure statement. Each covered person must disclose on the disclosure statement all situations that pose a potential or actual conflict of interest as set forth in the disclosure statement. A copy of the policy is given to each newly elected or appointed covered person prior to the commencement of his or her duties. Each covered person must acknowledge, not less than annually, that he or she has read and is in compliance with this policy.

Compensation based on past employment was established for the officer position of executive director in 2024. A full review of the compensation for this position was undertaken during november - december 2024 to set compensation and review process for 2025 and moving forward. The organization does not have other compensated officers or key employees.

The collection is displayed on a rotating basis on site and is available for research as well as loan for off-site exhibitions. The collection furthers forge's vision of supporting leaders in indigenous arts and culture by directly supporting native artists who remain engaged through public events and pro-actively placing these important pieces in exhibition spaces throughout the world, actively pushing the cultural conversation around indigenous art.

FOUR FELLOWSHIPS ARE AWARDED TO INDIGENOUS LEADERS IN ARTS AND CULTURE ACROSS DISCIPLINES IN THE US AND CANADA.EACH OF THE SIX FORGE PROJECT FELLOWS RECEIVES A TOTAL OF $25,000 TOWARD THEIR PRACTICE AND HAS ACCESS TO THE FORGE PROJECT SITE, LIBRARIES, AND LENDING COLLECTION OF LIVING INDIGENOUS ARTISTS DURING A RESIDENCY STAY OF UP TO THREE WEEKS.
