Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Direct Assistance to Members. In 2016 NFWD assisted forest workers recover wages owed to them, helped injured workers navigate the workers' compensation system, and referred workers to legal counsel to help them resolve workplace issues. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Outreach and Education to the Public. In 2016 NFWC staff attended and/or convened monthly meetings, conducted canvassing campaigns to educate the public about forest worker issues, and tabled at several public events dispensing information about forest worker and harvester issues, workers' rights, and occupational safety and health. NFWC staff also conducted and/or attended meetings with agency officials and state legislators to educate them about the realities of forest work. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Monitoring of the Matsutake Mushroom Harvest. NFWC monitored the wild matsutake mushroom harvest on the Deschutes, Fremont-Winema, Umpqua and Willamette national forests to educate harvesters about sustainable harvesting practices and to act as a liaison between harvesters and the Forest Service on issues that directly affect harvesters.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Training Forest Workers in Occupational Safety and Health. During the 2016 year, NFWC community health workers trained 336 workers in the forestry services industry in southern Oregon's Rogue Valley for a total of 585 hours of training. The topic covered in the trainings was preventing heat-related illnesses while working outdoors. Official statistics suggest that forest workers are 15 times more likely to suffer heat stress than the average worker. These estimates are likely too low, however, because heat stress often goes unreported because workers are often not hospitalized for the illnesses and therefore their employers are not required to report the incidents. An evaluation of our training showed that 3 to 6 months after receiving the training more than half the workers interviewed said they had changed the way they do things at work as a result of the training. The kinds of things they do differently included being more careful, drinking more water, working at a slower pace, and following the advice on the fact sheet they were given at the training. All workers interviewed could identify at least 3 symptoms of heat stress.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0In 2016 NFWC completed the interviewing phase of a study of the circumstances under which forest workers are injured on the job and under which they take proactive steps to improve working conditions. We are conducting this research in collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Agricultural Safety and Health Center at the University of Washington and the Labor Occupational Health Program at the University of California, Berkeley. We conducted a total of 124 interviews (99 pre-selection and 25 case study) of workers who had been injured on the job and/or had taken steps to improve working conditions. Study results show that being struck by an object (usually a falling tree or branch) is the leading cause of injury of forest workers in southern Oregon. Based on these results, we worked with 5 forest workers to make vidoes about their accidents and proactive attempts to improve working conditions and developed training materials to accompany the videos. We are now using the videos and training materials to train other workers in preventing injuries on the job as well as in how to engage constructively with management to improve working conditions.
