Activity 2

Early literacy programs reach babies and young children, especially those vulnerable to low literacy, during a crucial window for early brain development. Targeting families with limited resources and reading ability, these programs help parents by encouraging them to become the first, best, and most permanent teachers of their children. Last year, 36,000 young children and parents benefitted from Raising A Reader, a program that helps them read together at home throughout the year. More than 400 caregivers, educators and home health providers were able to rely on the program to enhance their work with struggling families. The New Parent Program reached every first-time parent in the county, encouraging parents to read with newborns and engage with the library.

Activity 3

An array of financial literacy programs, workshops and events at library branches and outreach centers support those impacted most by the tough economic climate. Seniors who are isolated and at risk for fraud, as well young families who are struggling, are primary targets for the library's financial literacy efforts. Children and adults were also able to access free arts, cultural, and instructional programs at branches across the system. Last year, more than 20,000 adults and families were reached with these programs.
