The mckenzie river valley consists of unincorporated communities located on approximately 50 miles of highway 126 and along the mckenzie river east of springfield, oregon.”
“Communications - the mckenzie cdc website required improvements. Community systems inc was engaged to make improvements and move in the direction of incorporating mckenziecommunity.org with other community websites supported by community systems inc. Communications work included creating the "community mixer" program, creating marketing materials for activities and events, creating press releases, and writing articles for area publication. Also, a facebook page was maintained.”
“Board training - the mckenzie cdc managed a project to engage board members for community organization in training through nonprofit workshops, training offered through organizations in the area and customized training delivered in the mckenzie river area. Materials are available to organizations for current and future board members.”
“First impressions - a rural directions initiative (rdi) project to assess visitors first impression of area businesses, communities and activities was initiated through data collection in 2017. The rare americorps members were trained and completed the assessment phase during their end of year service activity in july. The mckenzie cdc did the planning for the project, monitored the data collection and continued to coordinate the development of the report through the remainder of 2017. Report delivery and project generation will be completed in 2019. Funding for mckenzie cdc employee time was provided through general operating funds. Rdi funding was developed through other sources including cycle oregon.”
“Blue river revitalization: support local efforts to revitalize the unincorporated town of blue river. Support may address issues such as water district improvements, developing a waste water system, park improvements, highway signs or main street improvements and may include project development, fundraising or fiscal sponsorship. Children's forest development: the usda forest service children's forest program has four national goals: 1.connect children, adults, and families to healthy outdoor experiences. 2.create new education and career opportunities. 3.foster an understanding of how the changing environment affects the world and how people can work together to embrace these changes. 4.provide professional development opportunities for educators with an emphasis on conservation and the natural world. The mckenzie cdc is providing leadership to develop a children's forest in the mckenzie river valley through the organization's resource assistance through rural environments (rare) americorps member, ashley adelman. So far, ms. Adelman has provided background information, helped to expand the number of partners involved in the project, organized strategic planning meetings for the project, and provided regular communications to partners to share progress. When accomplished, the children's forest will provide educational opportunity to students in schools throughout the area, provide additional recreational opportunity in the mckenzie river valley, and boost economic benefit to local businesses, especially those connected to tourism. Mckenzie frenzy: re-establish the outdoor recreational event that was initiated in 2016 to bring visitors to the area in the "shoulder season" to increase economic activity in slow periods. Broadband: improvements including internet access for residents that have little or no access currently, increased capacity for institutions such as the school and clinic, and establishment of internet hot spots where other options are unfeasible.”
“All of the program services, except the children's forsest development, included on part iii of form 990-ez and described in detail on schedule o were new in 2017. The new programs do not represent a significant change in services. The mcdc continues to serve as an umbrella organization to address important community needs in collaboration with other organizations across a geographic scope that includes the entire mckenzie river watershed valley. The o'leary trail loop restoration project was completed.”
