Oregon ballet theatre is committed to sharing our passion for the expressive power of ballet, inspiring an enduring appreciation of dance, and connecting in meaningful ways to our community through excellence in performance, training, and educational programs. Oregon ballet theatre is the largest professional ballet company in oregon, employing nearly 200 people and attracting artists from around the globe with our reputation for excellence. The company is rooted in the traditions of classical ballet, with a repertoire that ranges from the great classics to premieres from some of the most exciting choreographic voices in the field today. Our mission is dedicated to the vitality of, and access to, world-class ballet performance and training in our region. In addition to our 5-show main stage season, we train dancers from 4 years old to 80 years old.
Major Activities
- Activity 2
- Professional ballet school: the acclaimed school of oregon ballet theatre (sobt) provides world-class training to young dancers and performing artists. Named "best ballet school" (portland monthly magazine, 2006), sobt seeks to ensure that all students achieve their full potential and gain a lasting appreciation of the arts, regardless of whether they choose to pursue a professional career in dance. Under school director damara bennett, the school is now operating near capacity with approximately 210 students enrolled. Within the last five years, 27 sobt students have gone on to professional careers or well-known dance programs. Our summer intensive program has attracted students from 30 states and eight countries.
- Activity 3
- Educational outreach: obt's education and outreach (edout) programming focuses on student learning through experience: observation, participation, and reflection. Our programming is offered primarily during the school year, since it is tied directly to school content standards for the arts. We offer 11 programs that aim to illuminate dance and its relation to other arts and academic subjects. Observing the highly skilled artistry of obt dancers is central to student engagement, whether it occurs in the theatre (the student performance series, in which students come to the theatre to see a thematically designed performance, and photo/art encounter, where visual art students sketch and photograph dancers in rehearsal); during in-school performances (like ballet stage by stage, where obt apprentice dancers perform at schools, showing choreography and the progression of dance training, and, new this year, certain obt company dancers will be available to perform in middle and high schools, revealing dance as an athletic and artistic career); or during field trips to obt studios (obt l.a.b. And field trips to obt, where students see costumes being made, watch dancers take class, and have the opportunity to dance in a studio). Students participate in various dance forms, especially ballet, with our teaching artists (obt l.a.b., pre-performance workshops, and short and long term residencies, where the actual movements and motivations of dance are physically explored). Special education and at-risk students benefit from uniquely-focused dance training in dance matters programming. Student reflection occurs either verbally or in writing as part of the collaboration process with teachers and students. Obt also provides study guides, a series of written resource materials that reveal dance themes and links to art content standards.our offerings develop knowledgeable audience members of all ages, provide artistic outlets to at-risk youth, and give students from all backgrounds equal access to professional, fully-produced ballet. Participation in our offerings has increased dramatically over the past few seasons, in relation to increased need and public awareness, as well as continued institutional support. All our youth programming is aligned with oregon educational standards for arts learning, and all of it is offered in a classroom setting or during the school day, rather than as optional or after-school programming. Last year we reached nearly 8,000 students in the portland metro area and beyond. We also reached over 21,000 adult/mixed age audience members through our outreach efforts, such as public lectures and pre-show talks.
