Coastwatch: this program organizes volunteers (currently more than 1500) who adopt and keep watch over one-mile segments of the oregon shoreline, observing both natural changes and human impacts, and reporting the information not just to oregon shores; but to resource agencies, local governments, other conservation groups and local residents. Coastwatch provides training sessions to volunteers on various aspects of shoreline monitoring (always open to the public), and also provides extensive public education about marine and coastal science through conferences, lectures, guided walks and webinars. The program also organizes citizen science projects, through which volunteers (both coastwatchers and others) collect data of use to scientists and resource agencies. Ocean: the ocean program addresses marine conservation issues of all types. A major focus has been support for creation of marine reserves and other protected areas in oregons territorial waters. As a founding member of the oregon marine reserves partnership, oregon shores works through the ocean program to build public knowledge of and support for oregons current set of five marine reserves. The program also seeks to educate the public about marine debris impacts and how they can be abated. In 2019 and 2020, the ocean program together with coastwatch is organizing and educating citizens to campaign for higher levels of protection for rocky shoreline habitats, through the site designation process under oregons newly adopted rocky habitat management strategy.”
