Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Education and citizen participation.

SWNI empowers citizen action to improve and maintain the livability of Southwest neighborhoods

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc. (SWNI) provides a safe, welcoming and inclusive means of addressing community livability issues. SWNI is the district coalition for 16 of Portland's 95 neighborhood associations. SWNI purchases Zoom licenses so each neighborhood can meet safely online to discuss livability issues. When conditions allow SWNI helps with safe in-person meetings such as outdoor picnic and concerts. SWNI has well ventilated meeting space when COVID conditions in Portland allow for indoor meetings. SWNI is an all volunteer run organization with over one hundred enthusiastic participants. SWNI is funded entirely by community contributions. In the fiscal Year 2022-2023 SWNI received donations from 55 individuals and a few small corporate donations. SWNI is the fiscal sponsor for many small neighborhood funds. One of SWNI's most important goals is inclusiveness and making sure everyone is welcomed. In September 2022 SWNI partnered in holding a Native American Beaver Festival that was well attended and reviewed. We are sponsoring another festival for September 2023. SWNI services include a web page and email lists for each neighborhood and committee to communicate with members and the public to conduct meetings. SWNI serves as fiscal sponsor for 23 restricted accounts that allow neighborhood associations to conduct business and events. The SWNI Board also prepared a "Plan to restore Full Coalition Services for S/SW Residents" in March 2023 and submitted it to Portland's Office of Community and Civic Life.$12,500$12,500
SWNI published an online newspaper and website for Southwest Portland. The mailing list is over 2,000 and many others get it on the SWNI web page. Each neighborhood writes an article about neighborhood events There are articles about resources and events all over Portland. The newspaper has a very dedicated, mostly volunteer staff. The newspaper includes articles from other community organizations such as Neighborhood House and SWTrails.$7,500$7,500
SWNI sponsors several committees to work on livability issues. Equity & Inclusion Committee: The Equity & Inclusion Committee acts to improve and expand SWNI's engagement with under-represented communities and community-based organizations in Southwest Portland. More specifically, the committee: * Partners with diverse, self-identifying organizations * Works to support more representative governance to improve decision-making in government * Supports progressive change in the culture of civic engagement through education and outreach efforts * Provides policy recommendations and guidance to SWNI's NAs and standing committees on issues related to equity and inclusion Parks & Community Centers Committee: The Parks and Community Centers Committee acts as a forum in the community to promote parks, community centers; public spaces such as squares and monuments; open spaces of any types, including cemeteries, golf courses, and school fields; and recreational and educational programs of Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R). More specifically, the committee: * Develops working relationships with PP&R that allow the community a voice in decisions that affect parks and park programs in SW Portland. * Participates in citywide parks planning projects. * Participates in and promotes neighborhood participation in master planning for individual parks. * Supports efforts to acquire new park space and build new community centers * Monitors school district actions to help preserve school district buildings, playgrounds, and fields. * Recommends actions and positions, as appropriate, to the SWNI Board. Land Use Committee: The Land Use Committee acts as a forum in the community to address land issues. More specifically, the committee: * Advises and aids neighborhoods in responding to land use reviews. * Participates in a wide range of planning projects and public discussions related to land use, including proposed changes to the zoning code, environmental protections such as tree preservation and stormwater management, and district planning such as the Marquam Hill Plan and South Waterfront * Recommends actions and positions, as appropriate, to the SWNI Board. Public Safety Committee: The SWNI Public Safety Committee acts as a forum to support community partnerships to prevent crime and the fear of crime in the community. More specifically, the committee: * Increases community policing and livability by encouraging the formation of Neighbors Together groups and disseminating crime prevention and reporting information. * Focuses on neighborhood priority issues such as car prowls, car theft, identity theft, and burglary. Works with the City of Portland to problem solve, share information, and address crime issues. * Host community meetings to increase awareness and give residents preventive measures Schools Committee: The charge of the SWNI Schools Committee is to enhance communication between schools (both public and private) and neighborhoods. More specifically, the committee will address issues such as: * School events and partnership opportunities with neighborhood associations * School boundary adjustments * Role of school property as community open space * School closures * Sale of school properties Transportation Committee: The Transportation Committee acts as a forum in the community for improvement of the transportation system in SW Portland in all its modes: auto, pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and even freight. More specifically, the committee: * Advocates the city/state for infrastructure and safety improvements for the above transportation modes. * Works with neighborhoods to resolve speeding problems and locations with frequent crashes. * Supports the community in infrastructure planning projects like the Barbur Streetscape Plan, Barbur Concept Plan, Capitol Highway Plan, and Southwest Corridor Plan. * Participates in city and regional transportation system planning like the city's Transportation System Plan and Metro's Regional Transportation Plan. * Recommends actions and positions, as appropriate, to the SWNI Board. IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt0Southwest Neighborhoods, Inc. The SWNI Board also prepared a "Plan to restore Full Coalition Services for S/SW Residents" in March 2023 and submitted it to Portland's Office of Community and Civic Life.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt1SWNI published an online newspaper and website for Southwest Portland. The mailing list is over 2,000 and many others get it on the SWNI web page. Each neighborhood writes an article about neighborhood events There are articles about resources and events all over Portland. The newspaper has a very dedicated, mostly volunteer staff. The newspaper includes articles from other community organizations such as Neighborhood House and SWTrails.
IRS990EZ/ProgramSrvcAccomplishmentGrp/DescriptionProgramSrvcAccomTxt2SWNI sponsors several committees to work on livability issues. * Participates in city and regional transportation system planning like the city's Transportation System Plan and Metro's Regional Transpor
