Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

We review the 990 with our finance committee, with our cpa and board members. Our cpa reviews with and presents the audited financial statements and the 990 to our board in person. Subsequent to the cpa's review and presentation, the board votes for approval to accept and to file the 990 tax return.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

We regularly update the conflict of interest policy by requiring employees and board members to sign their understanding of it annually.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15

All compensation received by the ceo, cfo, and top management positions are reviewed and compared to the current market wage. It is then approved by the board before any changes are made to compensation.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 18

The 990 tax return is available on our website found at http://www.dogsforthedeaf.org. It is also available on guidestar and other various websites. The public can request a copy of the 990 tax return and it will be sent to them promptly.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

Information on the governing documents as well as the financial statements are available on our website and on guidestar. In addition, the public can request detail on the organization.

IRS990/Desc0OUR CERTIFIED, PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE DOG TRAINERS GO TO ANIMAL SHELTERS ACROSS THE WESTERN UNITED STATES EVALUATING DOGS TO FIND THE RIGHT TEMPERAMENT, CONFIDENCE AND WORK ETHIC TO BECOME ASSISTANCE DOGS. DOGS MEETING THE CRITERIA ARE BROUGHT TO OUR FACILITY FOR FURTHER EVALUATION AND BEGIN EXTENSIVE TRAINING. THIS TRAINING TAKES 4-6 MONTHS FOR EACH DOG. THE DOG IS THEN CAREFULLY MATCHED WITH ONE OF THE APPLICANTS ON OUR WAITING LIST, AND THE TRAINER TAKES THE DOG TO THE CLIENT'S HOME. THE TRAINER SPENDS 3-5 DAYS TRAINING WITH THE CLIENT AND ANY FAMILY MEMBERS ON HOW TO MAINTAIN THE DOG'S TRAINING AND CARE FOR THE DOG. AFTER PLACEMENT, WE PERFORM CONTINUAL FOLLOW UPS WITH ALL OF OUR TEAMS. OUR CLIENTS PROVIDE REGULAR PROGRESS REPORTS, WE PERFORM IN-HOME FOLLOW UP VISITS, AND WE ASSIST WITH ANY PROBLEMS THEY ARE HAVING AS THEIR LIVES AND HEALTH CHANGE OVER THE YEARS. WE PROVIDE GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT FOR THE LIFE OF THE TEAM AND THEN HELP WITH EITHER THE RETIREMENT OR THE PASSING OF THE DOG AND PLACING A NEW DOG WITH THE CLIENT. IN THE FISCAL YEAR 2016-2017, WE RESCUED 46 DOGS FROM SHELTERS, ACQUIRED 19 THROUGH NETWORKING WITH OTHER SERVICE DOG AGENCIES AND ACCEPTED 1 OWNER SURRENDER. WE PLACED A TOTAL OF 82 DOGS*: 20 HEARING DOGS, 2 PROGRAM ASSISTANCE DOGS, 1 AUTISM ASSISTANCE DOG AND 59 CAREER CHANGE DOGS. OUR AUTISM ASSISTANCE DOG PROGRAM IS A NEW AND DEVELOPING PROGRAM WHICH WE EXPECT TO GROW SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE NEXT YEAR. THE PROGRAM ASSISTANCE DOGS WE PLACED IN THE LAST YEAR ARE MAKING INCREDIBLE DIFFERENCES IN THE CLASSROOM. THE ONLY REVENUE GENERATED FROM OUR PROGRAMS IS A $50.00 APPLICATION FEE. DURING THE FISCAL YEAR, WE MAINTAINED REGULAR CONTACT WITH 115 CLIENTS WHO HAVE OUR DOGS, ENSURING THAT THEY ARE DOING WELL TOGETHER AND RECEIVING MAXIMUM BENEFIT FROM EACH OTHER. WE EXPECT EACH ASSISTANCE DOG TO BE WITH THE CLIENT FOR APPROXIMATELY 10-12 YEARS OR MORE, WHICH PROVIDES A LONG-TERM BENEFIT TO THE DOG, THE PERSON AND THE PERSON'S ENTIRE FAMILY. NOT ONLY ARE THE DOGS' LIVES SAVED, BUT THE DOGS, IN TURN, GO ON TO GREATLY ENHANCE THE PEOPLE'S LIVES INCREASING INDEPENDENCE AND CONFIDENCE, PROVIDING SERVICE AND COMPANIONSHIP AND INCREASING SAFETY.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE VARIOUS TYPES OF DOGS THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO HELP PEOPLE WITH PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND EMOTIONAL CHALLENGES IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF OUR ORGANIZATION. HEARING LOSS AND SOME OF THE OTHER CHALLENGES WE TRAIN DOGS TO HELP WITH ARE INVISIBLE. THE PUBLIC IS OFTEN NOT AWARE OF THE NEEDS OF THESE PEOPLE AND THE BENEFITS OF A SPECIALLY, PROFESSIONALLY TRAINED DOG. WE USE A VARIETY OF METHODS AND OPPORTUNITIES TO TELL PEOPLE HOW THESE DOGS PROVIDE GREATER SAFETY AND INDEPENDENCE AND INCREASE SELF-ESTEEM.THIS EDUCATION IS DONE THROUGH OUR MAGAZINE, THE CANINE LISTENER, WHICH IS MAILED TO 18,000 PEOPLE AND CONTACTS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN OUR WORK. IN ADDITION, WE TRAVEL AND GIVE PRESENTATIONS FOR VARIOUS GROUPS, EDUCATING THEM ON HOW OUR DOGS ARE TRAINED TO ASSIST CLIENTS. OUR VIDEO ALSO HIGHLIGHTS THE IMPORTANT, LIFE-SAVING BENEFITS OUR DOGS PROVIDE AND WE DISTRIBUTE THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY, IN ORDER TO REACH EVEN MORE PEOPLE. DURING THIS FISCAL YEAR, WE CONTINUED TO DEVELOP THE DFD VOLUNTEER AMBASSADOR PROGRAM. AMBASSADORS ARE PEOPLE, FROM ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY, WHO HAVE BEEN TRAINED AND ARE WILLING TO MAKE PRESENTATIONS ON BEHALF OF DOGS FOR THE DEAF IN THEIR LOCAL AREAS. THIS PROGRAM IS A GREAT HELP, AT VERY LITTLE COST, IN EDUCATING EVEN MORE PEOPLE ABOUT OUR MISSION. THERE IS NO REVENUE GENERATED FROM OUR PUBLIC EDUCATION. DONATIONS, OF COURSE, ARE GENERATED. THROUGH THE CANINE LISTENER, THE DFD AMBASSADOR PROGRAM AND OTHER PRESENTATIONS BY STAFF AND CLIENTS, PEOPLE ARE EDUCATED ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF INCLUDING DOGS FOR THE DEAF IN THEIR ESTATE PLANNING. THE ESTATE GIVING PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED MANY YEARS AGO AND DOGS FOR THE DEAF RECEIVES CONSISTENT INCOME FROM BEQUESTS, WILLS AND TRUSTS. DOGS FOR THE DEAF, INC. IS THE OLDEST HEARING DOG TRAINING CENTER IN THE U. S., AND WE WERE AMONG THE FIRST FIVE ASSISTANCE DOG ORGANIZATIONS IN THE WORLD TO BE FULLY ACCREDITED BY ASSISTANCE DOGS INTERNATIONAL. OUR TRAINERS MUST COMPLETE A THREE-YEAR APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM TO BECOME CERTIFIED. WE HAVE ONE OF THE MOST THOROUGH FOLLOW UP PROGRAMS IN THE ASSISTANCE DOG FIELD. DOGS FOR THE DEAF CONSISTENTLY WORKS TO BE A PREMIER NATIONAL PROVIDER OF PROFESSIONALLY TRAINED ASSISTANCE DOGS.
