Form 990

Form 990, part ix, line 24b. Refund of prior year expense: this amount represents the difference between estimated liabilities at the time we closed our fiscal year end 6-30-13 books, and the actual liabilities paid. The difference represents a reduction in the final price for some vendor expenses.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

As: write or phone a policymaker, donate money to a charity, or sign a petition. -sponsor at least 60 interns and engage around 400 volunteers. Interns are responsible for running their own campaign or a portion of their own campaign. -organize 3 statewide meetings per term that include board of directors meetings where students participate in organizational decisions, skills trainings and issue briefings. 2.protecting consumers: what follows is a list of ospirg consumer resources that we distributed on campus and in the community. All are available at our website, free of charge. -oregon renters handbook -finding the best bank for your buck -what affects my credit -how to choose safe toys for your little ones -how to keep your personal information safe online -how to choose the best cell phone plan -tips to save on textbooks -tips to manage your financial aid -health care 101: so you need health insurance, now what? -how to avoid identity theft -how to avoid the credit card trap 3.hunger and homelessness: 18% of oregon children have limited or uncertain access to adequate food and the number of families in need is on the rise. In fy16, we continued our partnership with food for lane county and other community organizations to raise funds and food to supply healthy meals to the hungry and homeless population in lane and jackson counties. Activities included canned food and fundraising events, as well as volunteer events at food pantries. At lane community college, ospirg supported on-campus resources for unhoused students like the rainy day food pantry and the no cash clothing stash by collecting hundreds of canned food and clothing items. 4.curtail overuse of antibiotics: medical experts, including from the world health organization, are warning that if we don't stop the overuse of antibiotics they could stop working -- with potentially grave consequences for public health. The centers for disease control and prevention estimates that 23,000 americans die annually from antibiotic resistant infections. Antibiotic overuse in both humans and farm animals is the culprit, but more so in farm animals. According to fda sales data, 70% of the medically important antibiotics sold in the u.s. Are for use on food-producing animals - often to make animals grow bigger, or to offset crowded or unsanitary conditions. The u.k. Government estimates that, without a course correction, antibiotic-resistant infections will kill 10 million people worldwide each year by 2050. Ospirg worked to engage students in successful national efforts to persuade both mcdonald's and subway to stop purchasing meat raised with excessive antibiotic use. Thousands of students submitted comments to the companies. Volunteers also hosted an education tour of a farm. 5.protecting the environment: protect crater lake: oregonians love crater lake, but year after year logging companies push to clear-cut old growth forest right outside the boundaries of crater lake national park. This threatens the wildlife, waterways, and ecosystem within the park. This fall, students worked to advocate for permanently protecting 500,000 acres of wilderness around crater lake national park. Volunteers educated students about this issue on campus, including making hundreds of class presentations, getting the issue covered in campus papers, and putting up educational posters around campus. Volunteers also hosted a "week of action," in which over 3,000 students signed a petition to senator ron wyden and then those volunteers met with his staff to advocate on the issue. Go solar oregon: there's compelling evidence that the technology exists to generate most of oregon's electricity from renewable sources in the near future. Currently, oregon has the potential to generate 68 million megawatt-hours of solar energy-140 percent more than our current annual energy use. Volunteers hosted a "solar power lunch hour" town hall at the mountain rose herbs factory, which had recently installed a solar arr
