Preserve railroad history and artifacts

| Maintained our Office in historic Union Station. Held monthly meetings for our Members and Guests with refreshments provided. Meetings are conducted both In Person and are also available On Line. Each meeting includes a program on railroad history. We continue to publish and mail our monthly newsletter, The Trainmaster. The publication includes articles on railroad history. Our archive includes all issues of The Trainmaster starting in 1956. These are searchable on our public website www.pnwc-nrhs.org, and can be very helpful when doing research on railroad history. | $0 | $14,882 |
| Maintained our Lending Library and Archive. Our volunteers continued work on installation of heavy duty pallet racking to replace the existing shelving. The new shelving will increase our storage capacity and will provide easier access for staff and researchers. The project will also remove painted wooden shelving. These materials, such as plywood or particle board, can emit fumes that are harmful for long term storage of paper materials. The project is replacing the existing shelving with metal pallet racking. The aisles are being made wide enough to allow use of a rolling step ladder, allowing safe and ready access to the higher shelves. Our volunteers are also working on specification and procurement of new HVAC equipment that will improve the stability of the temperature and humidity. We have received permission from our Landlord to install the condensing unit outside of the building. Having an environment where the temperature and humidity are controlled will aid in the long term storage of paper documents. We are also working on procurement of equipment to digitize paper records. Being able to scan books and flat paper drawings will improve our ability to catalog and index paper materials. There are several thousand drawings and maps in our collection. The ability to create digital copies will increase our options to make records searchable and viewable on line. | $0 | $13,558 |
| Our volunteer staff performed necessary repairs and maintenance on our railway rolling stock. This work is performed in accordance with Federal Railway Administration (FRA) regulations to ensure our railcars used to haul passengers are safe. We have volunteers who have received classroom and hands on training and have been tested and are Certified to perform test and repair of the air brake equipment on railcars. The equipment used for testing of the air brakes is also Certified. The work these volunteers do is all in accordance with FRA rules and regulations. These passenger railcars are used as part of the Holiday Express Train, operated by the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation. The Holiday Express Train is pulled by a steam locomotive, and runs between Black Friday and New Years Day. The Holiday Express Train is a major event that sells out every year. There were over 15,000 passengers who rode on the Holiday Express Train. Many of these passengers are young people who have never been on a train before. Our volunteers provide staff for the train, as well as mechanical support while the train is in operation. Our passenger railcars are heated using steam from the steam locomotive used to pull the train. All of the equipment used for the steam heat, including the automatic control equipment is original. Our approach to the steam heating equipment has been to understand what the original designers had intended, rather than just replace the equipment with current technology. Even though much of the heat control equipment is more than 75 years old, it still works as designed and maintains the car interiors at a temperature that is comfortable for passengers. | $0 | $9,347 |
