Mission and Program Overview

Mission

BLACKS is a public charity. The primary exempt purpose is educational as a public benefit culturally specific organization

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Program accomplishments--BLACKS did its first after school program and summer program called SUCCESS setting up challenges to cultivate equitable starts for students. Blacks taught 8th graders math and did skill building in language arts. The purpose was to bring 8th graders up to a 9th grade level by the time they entered high school. The pilot was small but we served these students and graduated them into out where preparation meets opportunity program which follows them through high school as some of them will get a 2 year degree or a one year certificate from the local community college while they are still in high school. We gained a lot of traction so now students know we are here and the high schools has invited us to so run our programs as long as we let them know the when and they will provide the space. They saw the job we did with the kids so now they trust the organization to serve the Black students.$0$50,219
BLACKS hosted its first event called You Can 2. This event was an extension of what we did in the after school and summer programs as we exposed students to Black history figures through a lens of resiliency. Successful Blacks came and did interactive activities with students encouraging them that if they can do it so can the student. We used Black History 360 curriculum which was developed under the direction of the state of Oregon during our programming. A caterer artist and newscaster came to be in community with our students during this You Can 2 event. The students loved it.$0$6,277
BLACKS supported the largest Black Student Union in the state of Oregon in a debriefing of an attack on an autistic Black student who was attacked while students hurled racists remarks at him.BLACKS spoke at the Black student unions in the high schools and the middle schools to encourage Black students. Our SEL curriculum taught students how to be healthy socially and emotionally during our after school and summer programming. BLACKS was called on several times to advocate for students.$0$6,277
