PlantCon is a convention and expo that takes Houston Plant Market to the next level and extends our reach globally. Over 2,500 people attended, over 60 small businesses vended, and 20 educational seminars and workshops were hosted free of charge. Many attendees travelled nationally or internationally to attend, helping to bridge and connect the broader horticultural community. PlantCon brings plants and horticultural education to the mass public, drawing in brand new plant parents and increasing their appreciation for and knowledge about horticulture. PlantCon's mass reach means that we can find and attract individuals who otherwise do not have a local community or connections to share in their hobby. We have attendees that tell us they met their best friends at PlantCon because they were able to find people to bond with over plants and horticulture. PlantCon also encourages and highlights the efforts of plant growers by hosting a Plant Competition where unique and rare specimens are placed on display for the public to view. Plant growers that vend at PlantCon are able to sustain their growing operations with the revenue they gain from selling their plants at PlantCon. Plants that come directly from growers are typically not found in stores and are not available for in-person purchase anywhere else other than at PlantCon.$0$44,055
Houston Plant Market is a recurring local pop up market that is hosted monthly (15 times in 2023) with an estimated 500 visitors and about 40 small businesses vending per market. This comes out to about 7,500 attendees in 2023. The market is free to attend, is family and pet friendly, and helps connect both new and experienced plant enthusiasts to local growers and businesses. We host a community booth to share horticultural education and exposure through activities like seed planting or "plant swapping". The plant swap allows attendees to trade plant cuttings and obtain and grow new plants at no cost to them whatsoever. The swaps broaden the range of plants that individuals are able to grow, appreciate, and learn about, and makes more plants accessible to more people. The markets are our way to regularly engage with our local plant community so we can continue to serve our existing enthusiasts while reaching new ones as well. This marketplace experience was created to provide a safe approach for any curious new members of the plant community to locally explore and actively participate in the collective share of wisdom and plant care resources that exist around them.$0$7,000
As Houston Plant Market was growing, we wanted something permanent year round that would bring joy to the plant community in Houston. We created a "Little Plant Library", similar to "Little Free Library" where people can take and leave plants as they wish. Every month our team refreshes the library, cleans it, and provides plant cuttings that are available for the public to trade with, on top of any cuttings that the public has already donated. This free community activation has brought joy to the local plant community, both to those who are seasoned and those who end up saying "why not?" to a new fun hobby. There have been a lot of additions like free plant supplies (soils, pots, propagation jars), that have functioned as an easy way to give a new life to already used items through mindful recycling. We estimate that 10-15 people visit the Little Plant Library each week, which comes out to about 500-700 in 2023.$0$50
