PRESCHOOL PROGRAM: 2024 marked the second year of operations of Little Angels of Mary's preschool in a rural and indigenous community of Santa Apolonia, where 69% of the children under the age of 5 are chronically malnourished and preschool education was non-existent. Little Angels of Mary provided early childhood education in Spanish and Kaqchikel (their native Mayan language) to 16 children ages 4 to 6, and daily nutritious meals for 28 preschool and elementary school students. The children enrolled in the preschool program showed significant improvements in their physical and cognitive growth. The community is now more aware of the importance of education and good nutrition for their children. The preschool program also implemented adult literacy classes with 12 young women and mothers who did not know how to read and write. Women as old as 55 are now able to count from 0 to 60 and write their name for the first time in their lives. The example set by Little Angels of Mary has inspired and empowered the community leaders to organize themselves to renovate the facilities of their local school and even create other development projects for their community.$37,699$42,037
MAYAN ARTISAN PROGRAM: Little Angels of Mary provided two full scholarships to 2 young indigenous women to learn professional dressmaking with an emphasis on traditional indigenous clothing. These new skills are helping the community as a whole to preserve their Mayan culture while encouraging the recipients to become entrepreneurs. Thanks to their enthusiasm, the two young women bought their own professional sewing machine to start a small business. The Mayan Artisan Program also supported 17 indigenous women to generate a sustainable income for their families through the traditional beaded items and other handicrafts they make. With the help of volunteers in the U.S., Little Angels of Mary helped the artisans to sell their creations at craft fairs, churches, bazaars and other venues. The sales revenue is reinvested in Little Angels of Mary's mission to help improve sustainably the lives of people in marginalized communities.$19,401$23,989
