OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Community Tourism: As part of The Organization's mission, they work with local government and business partners to attract small scale independent travelers to the region to help build a sustainable tourism economy. The Organization facilitates organizing the Salmon Jam Festival, a destination weekend event that draws visitors to Cordova from Anchorage and Fairbanks. With post-pandemic innovation, tourism in Cordova is being geared to environmentally-conscious approaches to having visitors engage in the community and wild spaces. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Recycling: As part of The Organization's mission, they work to promote recycling throughout the Copper River area. The Organization strives to maintain sustainable practices within its own operations and encourages community members to do the same. The Organization has a focus on fish net recycling within Cordova, reducing marine debris and waste ending up in the landfill. As a ROAR partner, we help facilitate recycling and on-site cleanup of recycling containers in the Copper basin.

Financial Statement Notes

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

The Organization is a nonprofit corporation exempt from income taxation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Although the Organization is exempt from federal income taxes, any income derived from unrelated business activities is subject to the requirement of filing Federal Income Tax Form 990-T and a tax liability may be determined on these activities. The Organization had no incomederived from unrelated business activities as of December 31, 2022 or 2021.The Organization classifies all interest and penalties related to tax contingencies as income tax expense. As of December 31, 2022, there are no accrued interest or penalties. As of December 31, 2022 there were no uncertain tax positions or unrecognized tax benefits for which management believes it is reasonably possible that the total amounts of tax contingencies will significantly increase or decrease within 12 months of the reporting date. The Organization files tax returns in the US Federal Jurisdiction and the State of Alaska. As of 2022, the tax years that remain subject to examination begins with 2019.

IRS990/Desc0Fish Habitat The Organization works to identify, monitor and restore salmon habitat throughout the Copper River drainage. By convening state and federal agency, community and Tribal partners, we form planning teams and partnerships to identify salmon habitat data gaps, and key salmon habitat locations in need of restoration. Watershed-scale planning enables maximizing restoration dollars to ensure the best outcomes for supporting salmon and other fish species, ensures healthy hydrology and buffers the surrounding landscape for inclement weather changes and flash flooding or changes in hydrology associated with climate change. By supporting and improving fish habitat, we support healthy salmon populations, culturally significant traditions, and all the salmon economies associated with this important natural resource.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Invasive Plant Management The Organization is working to facilitate partnerships among public and private land managers and land owners in both the Copper River basin and the Copper River delta area to identify and treat invasive plants. Invasive plants are particularly aggressive and threaten fish and wildlife habitat by cording out native plants, reducing the foraging opportunities for native fish and wildlife. While many places in the North America are simply trying to mitigate damage associated with invasive plants, the Copper River watershed has a chance for eradication of some noxious weeds. By treating wetland invasive plants in the town of Cordova, for example, we have held back the spread to the Copper River delta, one of North Americas largest intact wetlands. The Organization works to engage partners and key stakeholders in reducing the introduction of invasive plants and treatment of known infestations through volunteer events and targeted education programs.

In partnership with federal agencies and other nonprofits, the Organization organizes and hosts a leadership building, field-based program for high school students every summer. The Organization supports a salmon rearing tank in every school in the Copper River watershed and a spring salmon fry release field trip, as well as other field-based programming as requested. The Organization presents during summertime teacher professional development workshops in order to inspire teachers to engage their students in outdoor learning. A ladder approach has been designed to introduce students to outdoor education opportunities at multiple points over their K-12 school experience. Stewardship and connection to place are highlighted in programming.
