Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Promote the art of hand weaving

To promote interest in hand weaving in the community through education, instruction, research, and service without profit.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
(1) Upon request, the Guild presents educational programs to adults and children, supplies weaving kits to small groups, does public weaving demonstrations, and maintains a vast library of books and publications that document the fiber arts and the preservation of textiles.(2) Some of our members provide guidance to beginning weavers at Southeast Senior Center each Tuesday throughout the year. The Senior Center provides space for a weaving studio at minimal charge to the weavers. Our Guild provides the equipment and yarn.(3) The guild has monthly meetings during which recognized weavers present a program to our members and to any interested member of the community.-$87,398
The Seattle Weavers Guild annual sale and show in October each year is a major event. In addition to raising funds for the operation of the Guild, it is a community outreach event that introduces the public to our fiber artists, demonstrations of various weaving equipment, and the concept of fiber as a medium of artistic expression. This event has brought our members talents to the attention of others in the area and has resulted in several other service opportunities at schools and museums. In November 2025, we were invited to demonstrate weaving at the Best of the Northwest craft show. There we gave both adults and children opportunities to try weaving on small looms.-$78,088

IRS990ScheduleA/Form990ScheduleAPartVIGrp/ExplanationTxt0DOCUMENTING PUBLIC SUPPORT -- This is essentially the same information that I previous wrote to fit lines 28 and 29 on the tax form (see page 2) but with greater detail. It is intended to fit the Facts and Circumstances test.Sources of Support: The financial support for the Seattle Weavers Guild (SWG) comes from member dues, donations from members, legacy gifts, and charitable contributions through corporate giving programs. A small amount comes from royalties from Schiffer Publishing when the publisher sells material that was produced by the Seattle Weavers Guild.Governing Body: the Guild is governed by a 16-member Board, all of whom are SWG members. One Board member is specifically responsible for community outreach and supported by volunteers from the Guild. Other board members are aware of events and organizations in their communities in the greater Puget Sound area and provide ideas and contacts for the Board member who leads community outreach.Services and Programs: A major service of the guild is the collection and maintenance of a library on weaving and fiber arts. This collection is far greater than anything that would typically be available through a general public library. It is of particular value to artists and craftspeople for both research and creation of new work. Public Participation: Monthly meetings of the guild are open to anyone regardless of membership; meetings are announced on social media. Our annual weaving show and sale is widely advertised to the general public and specifically intended to draw interest and attendance from the public. Demonstrations of spinning and weaving are scheduled throughout the 2 day event. In recent years, the attendance has averaged 800-900 people.Several members of the Guild provide free instruction on weaving to members of the public who attend the Southeast Seattle Senior Center. This occurs one day per week in a well equipped studio at the Center. Guild members often donate looms and yarn for the programs at this Center. We provide an opportunity to anyone who has weaving equipment to sell to have their gear listed in our For Sale bulletins. A person selling weaving equipment does not need to be a guild member. This opportunity has been widely used by the public because it provides a specific audience for specialty equipment; it is more effective than using general advertising. The Guild does not receive any remuneration from these exchanges. At some community art fairs in the greater Seattle area, the Guild has been invited to provide free basic weaving kits and instruction for both children and adults. For a major exhibit of Ikat weaving at the Seattle Art Museum, our guild provided volunteers to explain and demonstrate Ikat weaving techniques.Members of the Guild have taught classes for a week at a time at elementary schools. The schools often offer funds to cover the cost of supplies. In June 2025, the SWG is hosting a regional event for the Association of Northwest Weavers Guild (ANWG) registration for which is open to anyone. We have been planning for this since 2023.
