| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Program Accomplishments ADVENTURES AHEADThe goal of Adventures Ahead is to improve education outcomes for elementary students by achieving grade-appropriate literacy and nurturing each childs development as a lifelong reader. Students who remained with the program for a full year averaged 16.7 months of improvement in their reading proficiency. Adventures Ahead is closing the achievement gap for children in South LA and nurturing in each one a life-long love for reading.ADVENTURES IN ROBOTICSAdventures in Robotics allows elementary school students the opportunity to engage in authentic engineering and programming experiences as a part of a FIRST Lego League (FLL) team while being mentored by members of the USC and Exposition Park community. In 2012-2013, we registered our first team of 2nd-5th grade students to participate in FLLs World Class Challenge. This year, our students built a robot from a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kits and successfully programmed several missions using EVT software. Our team tied for first place in their qualifying tournament and advanced to the Los Angeles regional tournament. Adventures in Robotics is a critical part of our strategy to nurture high academic achievement and a love for learning that bridges South LA children to college and fulfilling careers.School Choice Family Outreach ProjectThe neighborhood that Redeemer Community Partnership serves contains some of the lowest performing schools in the state of California. But students also have access to high-performing magnet schools with free transportation, charter schools that are boosting student achievement with innovative strategies, special programs led by local universities and a small number of neighborhood schools that are beating the odds. Over the years we have seen that many families either dont know about the options available or cannot figure out how to access better opportunities. To address this knowledge gap we published a full-color guidebook with easily understandable graphics, data charts, maps and instructions for various types of applications. We printed 500 booklets in English and 500 in Spanish. We distributed them in laundromats, health clinics, preschools, libraries, donut shops and other high traffic locations. We also hosted 17 events, including workshops, house parties, info tables and school visits. Many families gained a stronger understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of various schools in our area and what steps to take to find the best fit for their children.MAKE JEFFERSON BEAUTIFULMake Jefferson Beautiful is a community-driven campaign to enhance the beauty, safety and health of our South LA neighborhood by revitalizing a major commercial corridor, facilitating active modes of transportation (such as walking and biking), and activating the corridor for community-serving businesses. Working closely with the City of Los Angeles, we continued to lay the groundwork for a $6 million improvement project along Jefferson Blvd. Using funds from an Active Transportation Program (ATP) grant secured in June 2016, we plan to create protected bike lanes, pedestrian street lighting, curb extensions and a planted median to improve safety for people walking and biking on Jefferson Blvd. Our organizers have continued to engage local business owners, residents, school leaders and other stakeholders as the city conducts research and finalizes the new street design. Groundbreaking is scheduled for 2020. We also planted nineteen new drought tolerant trees along Jefferson Blvd. and contracted with a local youth organization to keep them well-watered while they get established.END NEIGHBORHOOD DRILLINGThe Jefferson Drill Site, operated by Sentinel Peak Resources, sits in the middle of our residential neighborhood just a few feet from neighboring homes. | IRS990ScheduleC/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 0 | END NEIGHBORHOOD DRILLINGThe Jefferson Drill Site, operated by Sentinel Peak Resources, sits in the middle of our residential neighborhood just a few feet from neighboring homes. The drill site severely impacts community health and safety. In 2013 RCP became a founding member of STAND (Stand Together Against Neighborhood Drilling), a grassroots coalition working to increase health and safety protections near drill sites and eventually, to end neighborhood oil drilling. In January 2017 we organized a large number of community residents to testify at a city hearing regarding the impacts of the Jefferson Drill site on our communitys health, safety and quality of life. Six months later that City of Los Angeles still had not made a determination, allowing the oil company to continue their hazardous practices. In August 2017 we held a large rally in front of the Jefferson drill site with the theme Justice Delayed is Justice Denied. The event received significant coverage by print and and television media. This put pressure on our elected officials to act, and in November the city finally issued a determination. The determination instituted substantial new safety protections including enclosure of the site, updated fire suppression equipment, continuous air quality monitoring, electric equipment to replace the diesel machinery being used, and more. We marked this milestone with a community celebration including dinner, photos, dancing and interactive displays. The oil company, as expected, appealed the expensive new regulations. So in January 2018 we organized a large group of community residents to testify at the appeal hearing. After hours of testimony from neighbors living near the site, the planning commission unanimously rejected the oil companys request. |
