| Our board of directors felt that increasing our membership would, in turn, help our chapter gain more significant influence and impact in our local community. We determined that growing our membership in the short term would benefit the chapter longer term. Our five-year objective is to grow SHRM membership to 80% of total membership through achieving established annual membership goals with a first-year target of 5%. To achieve our goal, our Membership Committee, comprised of three members, developed a multi-pronged strategy and implemented various recruitment and marketing tactics. A team of ten members reached out to at-large SHRM members, small businesses and through the local Chamber of Commerce. In addition to those efforts, each chapter member identified at least one non-member colleague and contacted them about membership, utilizing the scripts in the Membership Recruitment and Retention Toolkit. Our web master ensured that our web site was current and updated frequently with the latest membership benefit information and upcoming chapter activities. We promoted SHRM membership on our chapter web site highlighting a different SHRM membership benefit each month and to our conference attendees by including an overview of SHRM member benefits to all attendees. After surveying chapter members, we created a brochure to communicate the benefits of being a member of our chapter and SHRM and distributed it to prospective members. We also sent monthly meeting press releases to the media. We monitored our progress through the SHRM Monthly Membership Report. As a result of our strategies and the activities designed to support our growth, we surpassed our goal increasing our in-chapter membership by 6.5%. This growth qualified us for Membership Super Star status. We will continue this long-term initiative and have set our goal at 7%. While it was challenging at the start of the year and we didn't see the immediate results, our momentum grew as we saw our numbers slowly start to grow. 2015 was our 2nd year into our chapter's college relations initiative established in 2014, which was centered around increasing engagement between the WSU student chapter and our chapter. Building relationships with HR students today, paves a smooth pathway for them to continue to engage with our chapter after graduation as professional members, and widens our talent pool for potential chapter leaders in the future. Our chapter's goal was to be seen as the leading provider of SHRM Certification credit- approved programming, and main resource for supporting and promoting SHRM certifications in Southwest Washington. Looking ahead, we are positioning our chapter to continue to be seen as relevant in serving the evolving professional development needs of HR in our local community now and in the future. Early in 2015, our chapter applied to become a SHRM Preferred Provider for the new SHRM Certifications. We heavily promoted the benefits of SHRM certification, and the Pathway option through our newsletters, website, and announcements at monthly luncheons. Beginning in April, we began awarding Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for all programs we offer. Our chapter had approximately 70% of HRCI certified members achieve SHRM Certification through Pathway by the end of 2015. Increasing membership was a high priority goal in 2015, due to membership lagging over the past several years. Our first goal was to simply maintain our current members in 2015, and our stretch goal was to increase membership by 1%, every year over the next 3 years. We set this goal to be realistic about our ability to achieve it, given we did not have a volunteer to fill the Membership Director role in 2015. To work towards accomplishing our membership goal, we appointed an enthusiastic member to the position of Membership Coordinator. The membership coordinator ensured that membership applications were available at our monthly educational events, and that membership information was included in our newsletters, and other forms of communication. She also started hosting monthly membership drive networking events. These were free events that also included a guest speaker on a HR topic to draw interest and attendance. We also held our first Volunteer Leader Recruitment Event, intended to inform the HR community about SHRM and our chapter to draw interest in joining both organizations, and explore opportunities to get involved through chapter volunteer leadership. Lastly, to increase our presence and reputation to a broader audience within the HR and business community, we hired a world-renowned speaker as a keynote presenter at our annual conference. This is the first time we have paid for a speaker, but felt the investment in the speaker fee would draw the interest of a new and larger audience, hence, introducing them to our chapter. Our effort to increase outreach and visibility in the community was fruitful in gaining a broader audience at our events, particularly our annual conference where we had a record high of non-member attendees. Hence, we are gaining momentum in the right direction, but our efforts have not yet translated into increased membership. In 2015 we did great work in planting the seeds, in which we anticipate seeing the fruit of that labor come in 2016. | $0 | $24,649 |
