“Music of remembrance (mor) is a seattle-based performing arts organization dedicated to addressing questions of human rights and social justice through the transformative power of music. Established in 1998 with the mission to ensure that the voices of witness to the holocaust be heard, its vision has evolved to explore the resilience of all who have been persecuted or excluded for their faith, ethnicity, gender or sexuality. Over the years, it has demonstrated itself to be a powerful creative catalyst for "testimonies for tomorrow" - persuasive musical works that explore the consequences of intolerance toward the other.”

“Music of remembrance produced seven major concerts during its 26th season: four programs on our mainstage at seattle's benaroya hall, one in san francisco, and two in chicago, in collaboration with chicago opera theater. Additionally, we continued our online programming of past programs that we offered free of charge. Our opening concert on october 29, 2023, titled "between worlds," featured the world premiere of raven and the box of daylight, bringing together native american storytelling, dance, music and visual art to share a precious cultural heritage. Our art from ashes concert on january 22, 2024 commemorated international holocaust remembrance day and the 79th anniversary of the liberation of auschwitz. Three of seattle's talented youth ensembles -- the university of washington chamber orchestra, the northwest boychoir and seattle girls choir- joined mor artists in a program showcasing remarkable works created by murdered composers from across nazi-controlled europe. Our march 10, 2024 concert featured two world premieres: phoenix, by composer sahba aminikia and librettist zara houshmand captured an intense intergenerational dialogue about the ongoing struggle for women's rights in iran; new dances choreographed by spectrum dance theatre's donald byrd for the golem, captured a medieval jewish legend that has fascinated many generations as a complex metaphor for the struggle to survive during times of persecution. We concluded our season in may with a three-city tour (seattle, san francisco and chicago) of before it all goes dark, a new one-act opera that we commissioned from composer jake heggie and librettist gene scheer about an ailing vietnam war veteran's quest to recover nazi-looted art. Based on a true story reported by howard reich in the chicago tribune, the work takes one along on a transformative journey of self-discovery. Mor continues to lead the way with our unique commissioning program that has brought nearly fifty important new works into the world. In recent seasons we have commissioned and premiered compelling new works on native american experience, the wartime incarceration of japanese americans, the armenian genocide, the worldwide refugee crisis, the persecution of gay people, the threat of nuclear destruction, the consequences of religious prejudice of all kinds, the heartbreak of families separated by borders, and many other issues for our time.”
