“The master gardener foundation of thurston countys mission is to support an environmentally healthy community by raising funds for and awareness of the wsu master gardener and thurston county master recycler composter programs. The wsu extension master gardener (mg) program is a combination of training and public service. Wsu master gardener volunteers are trained and certified as community educators to provide professional, unbiased, research-based home gardening and horticulture information to the public. They answer questions and give advice to home gardeners on plant disease and identification, plant care, pest management, sustainable gardening and many associated topics. This is accomplished through various formal and informal activities, including but not limited to question/answer plant clinics, demonstration gardens (closed loop park, dirt works, olympia farmers market garden), youth gardening programs and other outreach programs (public presentation and education projects. The master recycler composter (mrc) program of thurston county is also a combination of training and public service. The county trains each master recycler composter volunteer on how to become a community educator on solid waste issues such as waste reduction, recycling, and composting within thurston county. In exchange for on-going, research-based, unbiased training, participants agree to volunteer as a community educator of thurston county. Master recycler composters participate in a wide range of county waste reduction activities and community events, or work in their own neighborhoods, schools, or workplaces on projects encouraging waste reduction, recycling and composting.”
